Can you clean an air filter instead of replacing it?

Cleaning the air filter instead of replacing it is tempting for the savings, but with standard paper filters it usually does more harm than good.

Paper filters — better to replace

Blowing them through with compressed air easily damages the paper structure, creating micro-holes through which dirt reaches the engine. In the short term the filter looks cleaner, but it filters worse.

When does cleaning make sense?

• Only with cone/sports filters designed for it
• Using dedicated cleaning fluids and impregnating oils
• Never in ordinary OEM paper filters
• If in doubt — simply replace the filter

A standard air filter is cheap enough that replacing it will always be safer. We’ll do it during the oil change.
