The shelf life of engine oil in a canister

Does engine oil in a sealed canister have a shelf life? Yes — although it ages slowly, over time it loses some of its properties.

How long can oil be stored?

Manufacturers usually state a shelf life of around 4–5 years from the production date, provided it’s stored correctly in a sealed container.

How to store oil?

• In a tightly closed, original container
• At a constant, moderate temperature
• Away from moisture and direct sunlight
• Upright, to limit contact with air

How can you tell the oil has aged? Separation, sediment at the bottom or cloudiness are a sign it’s better not to use it. If in doubt, we’ll use fresh oil from a trusted source during the change.
