The fuel filter — when to change it, especially in a diesel

4 min read

The fuel filter protects the injection system from contaminants and water. In diesels its role is especially important, because the injectors are very sensitive.

How often to change the fuel filter?

Most often every 30,000–60,000 km, depending on the car and the manufacturer’s recommendations. In diesels, keeping to this interval is crucial for the durability of the injection system.

Symptoms of a clogged fuel filter

  • Jerking and loss of power, especially under load
  • Hard engine starting
  • The car stalling at low revs
  • Rough running of the unit

The symptoms can resemble other fuel-system faults, so diagnostics are helpful. If in doubt, we’ll read the fault codes as part of our other services.

We’ll change the fuel filter during the oil and other filters change, saving your time.
