How to check the oil level with the dipstick, step by step
4 min readChecking the oil level is one of the simplest tasks every driver should be able to do. It takes a minute and protects the engine from serious problems.
Step by step
- Park the car on level ground
- Switch off the engine and wait a few minutes for the oil to drain into the sump
- Pull out the dipstick and wipe it with a clean cloth
- Insert the dipstick fully and pull it out again
- Check that the level is between the MIN and MAX marks
What to pay attention to?
The level should be close to the upper mark but not exceed it. Also pay attention to the oil’s colour and consistency. If the car has no dipstick, it uses an electronic level sensor.
Regular checks let you spot oil loss in time. If the level drops quickly, we’ll check the cause during the oil change.
