The oil pressure warning light — what to do?
4 min readThe red oil pressure warning light is one of the most serious signals on the dashboard. Ignored, it can mean a seized engine within minutes.
What to do immediately?
- Safely pull over to the side of the road and stop
- Switch off the engine immediately
- Check the oil level with the dipstick
- If necessary, top up the oil to the right level
- If the light doesn’t go out after starting — don’t drive on
Possible causes
- Too low an oil level
- A failed oil pump or pressure sensor
- A clogged oil filter
- Engine wear and a drop in pressure
A red oil warning light is an order to stop immediately — running dry destroys an engine in a flash.
If the cause was a low level or old oil, carry out a fresh oil change and a check. We’ll come to the address you give.
