Long Life Service — will the oil last 30,000 km?
5 min readLong Life Service is a flexible servicing system in which the car’s computer works out the oil change date itself — sometimes even every 30,000 km. It sounds convenient, but it has its pitfalls.
How does Long Life work?
The system analyses driving style, load and engine operating conditions, then extends or shortens the interval. However, it requires oil with a special, expensive Long Life approval.
When is it better to shorten the interval?
- Mainly city driving and short trips
- An older engine with higher mileage
- A car with LPG or one frequently under load
- A wish for maximum engine protection
In tough conditions many mechanics recommend switching to a fixed, shorter interval (so-called time-based servicing) — e.g. every 15,000 km. It’s more expensive over a year, but cheaper than an engine repair.
Long Life works well on the motorway. In the city it’s often better to choose a shorter, predictable interval.
Whatever the system, we’ll carry out the oil and filter change with call-out to you, selecting oil with the right approval.
