Synthetic or semi-synthetic oil — which to choose?
5 min readSynthetic or semi-synthetic oil — it’s one of drivers’ most common questions. The choice affects engine protection, change intervals and running costs.
How do they differ?
Synthetic oil is produced in a chemical process, giving it more stable properties across a wide temperature range. Semi-synthetic is a blend of mineral and synthetic base — cheaper, but less resistant.
- Synthetic: better protection, longer intervals, higher price
- Semi-synthetic: lower cost, for older or less demanding engines
- Synthetic copes better in frost and at high temperatures
- Semi-synthetic is sometimes chosen for older, high-mileage cars
Which to choose for your car?
The most important thing is the manufacturer’s recommendations — they define the required quality and approvals. Modern engines almost always require synthetic oil. For older, high-mileage designs a dedicated high mileage oil is sometimes better.
