Oil loss — is the engine burning it?
4 min readOil loss between changes is a common topic, especially in older cars. The question is: is the engine burning the oil, or losing it somewhere?
What loss is normal?
A small oil consumption (even up to 0.5–1 l per 1,000 km in some engines) is sometimes allowed by the manufacturer. Larger losses are a signal to act.
Burning or leaking?
- Burning: bluish smoke from the exhaust, especially when accelerating
- Leaking: stains under the car, a dirty engine
- Worn piston rings or valve seals (burning)
- A leaking sump gasket or drain plug (leak)
Stains under the car are easy to locate — see our guide on oil leaks. For burning, a dedicated high-mileage oil sometimes helps.
Regularly check the level and top up the oil when needed. During an oil change we’ll assess where the loss comes from.
