Environmentally responsible disposal of used oil
One litre of used oil can contaminate an enormous amount of water. Find out why you must not pour it away and what legal disposal looks like.
Environmentally responsible disposal of used oil
4 min readUsed engine oil is hazardous waste. Although it’s easy to forget when changing the oil yourself, its improper disposal harms the environment more than most drivers imagine.
Why it’s a serious problem
Just one litre of used oil can contaminate up to a million litres of water, forming a film on its surface that cuts off the oxygen supply. Oil poured into the soil, the drains or the bin ultimately reaches the groundwater.
What you must never do
- Don’t pour oil into the drains or the ground
- Don’t throw oil canisters into ordinary rubbish
- Don’t burn oil in a stove or a bonfire
- Don’t mix it with other operating fluids
What legal disposal looks like
Used oil should be handed in to a hazardous-waste collection point, a service station or a car parts shop that accepts used oil. The collected oil goes for refining and reuse.
A litre of oil poured “anywhere” isn’t a trifle — it’s a real stain on the groundwater for years.
With us disposal is included in the service
During a mobile oil change we take away all the used oil and old filters, and then hand them over for legal disposal. You don’t have to worry about it — it’s part of our service.
It’s one of the reasons it’s worth having the change done rather than doing it yourself in the yard — no hassle with the waste and no risk to the environment.
