Topping up oil — which oil to add between changes?
4 min readTopping up oil between changes is a common situation, especially in older cars. The key is to add the right oil and not overdo the amount.
Which oil to add?
Ideally exactly the same as what’s in the engine — the same brand, viscosity and approval. If you don’t have it, add an oil with the same viscosity and a similar specification.
How much to add and how to do it?
- Park on level ground and wait for the engine to cool down
- Check the oil level with the dipstick
- Add in small amounts (about 100–200 ml at a time)
- Check the level after each portion so you don’t overfill
Note: too much oil is just as dangerous as too little. Don’t go above the upper mark on the dipstick.
If the car regularly needs topping up, that’s a signal for a check. We’ll look into it during a call-out oil change.
