Too much oil on the dipstick — what’s the risk?
4 min readToo much oil in the engine is a common mistake when topping up yourself. Contrary to appearances, an excess can be just as harmful as a shortage.
What does excess oil risk?
- Oil foaming caused by the crankshaft and a drop in lubrication
- Increased pressure and a risk of leaks through the seals
- Greater strain on the catalytic converter and DPF
- Rough engine running
How to remove the excess?
A slight excess (a few millimetres above MAX) is usually not dangerous, but a clear overfill must be corrected — by extracting oil through the dipstick tube or draining it through the plug.
No way to correct the level? We’ll bring the oil to the right level during a call-out visit.
