The air filter — how often to change it and signs of wear

The air filter makes sure clean air reaches the engine. Neglected, it can raise fuel consumption and rob the car of power.

How often to change it?

As standard the air filter is changed every 15,000–30,000 km. If you often drive on dirt roads or in a dusty city, do it more often.

Symptoms of a worn air filter

• An increase in fuel consumption
• A drop in power and poorer acceleration
• Rough engine running
• A visibly dirty filter element

Sometimes drivers try to clean the filter instead of replacing it. Check when that makes sense and when it does harm.
