How to choose oil for a specific car model?
5 min readChoosing oil for a car shouldn’t be based on guessing. Three things matter: viscosity, the manufacturer’s approval and the oil type. Here’s how to establish them.
Where to look for information?
- The car’s owner’s manual — the section on operating fluids
- The manufacturer’s website with an oil finder by VIN
- Stickers and markings in the engine bay
- A consultation with a mechanic who knows your model
What to pay attention to?
First check the required viscosity (e.g. 5W30), then the approval (e.g. VW 504.00). For cars with a DPF, the ACEA C standard and Low SAPS oil are also crucial.
The right oil isn’t the most expensive oil, but the one compliant with your engine’s specification.
