How does the service counter calculate the oil change date?
4 min readThe service inspection indicator is a useful tool, but not an oracle. It’s worth knowing on what basis the car reminds you about an oil change.
What does the counter take into account?
- Kilometres driven since the last service
- The time that has passed since the change
- Driving style and engine load
- The number of starts and operating temperature (in newer cars)
Can you trust it?
In a typically used car the counter is a good indicator. However, in very tough conditions (city, LPG, short trips) it’s safer to change the oil earlier than the computer suggests.
Reset after the change
After every oil change you should reset the service indicator so it counts from scratch. We do this as standard during a mobile oil and filter change.
