10W40 oil — is it suitable for older cars?

4 min read

10W40 oil is a classic among semi-synthetic oils, often chosen for older cars with higher mileage. It has its advantages, but it doesn’t suit every engine.

Why does 10W40 like older cars?

The higher hot viscosity (40) and a slightly thicker base help in engines with operating clearances — they seal better and limit oil consumption by old units.

When NOT to use 10W40?

  • In modern engines requiring low viscosity
  • Where the manufacturer requires synthetic oil
  • In cars with a DPF requiring Low SAPS oils
  • At very low temperatures (worse starting than 5W/0W)

For an older car it’s often a sensible and economical choice. We’ll select the oil for the age and condition of your engine during a call-out change.
