Oil change in a DSG gearbox — wet vs dry

5 min read

The dual-clutch DSG gearbox combines the comfort of an automatic with the dynamics of a manual, but it requires a conscious approach to oil service. One distinction is key: is your DSG “wet” or “dry”?

Wet DSG — oil and filter to change

In a wet DSG the clutches run in an oil bath, and often the same oil also serves the mechatronics. It requires a regular change together with the filter — usually every roughly 60,000 km. That’s a real, necessary service, not an option.

Dry DSG — no hydraulic oil in the clutches

In a dry DSG the clutches don’t run in oil, so there’s no classic clutch-oil change. The mechanical part and the mechatronics do need lubrication according to the manufacturer’s recommendations. The service scope here is different from the wet version.

  • Wet DSG — oil + filter change, usually every ~60,000 km
  • Dry DSG — no clutch-oil change, service as recommended
  • Always confirm the gearbox type by VIN or code
  • The right oil and the correct bolt torque matter
With a DSG the first question is: wet or dry? The whole scope and the point of an oil service depend on it.

Why not to delay

Aged oil in a wet DSG worsens the operation of the clutches and mechatronics, and repairing them is costly. Symptoms such as jerking or delays in gear changes can be the first signal.

We carry out DSG oil service as part of our other mobile services — first we’ll establish your gearbox type and the right scope.
