Mineral oil — does it still make sense?

4 min read

Mineral oil is the oldest type of engine oil, today increasingly rare. Even so, it still has its uses in certain cars.

For which cars?

Mineral oils are used mainly in old, simple, high-mileage designs, engineered back when synthetics were not the standard.

Limitations of mineral oil

  • Weaker stability at high temperatures
  • A shorter change interval
  • Worse starting in frost than synthetics
  • No approvals required by new engines

In practice most cars today use synthetic or semi-synthetic oils. If you’re unsure whether mineral is enough, check the differences between oil types.

We’ll select the right oil type for the age of your car during a call-out oil change.
