The smell of burning oil — the most common causes

4 min read

The smell of burning oil, especially after a longer drive or when parked, most often means that oil is dripping onto hot engine or exhaust components.

The most common causes

  • An oil leak onto the manifold or exhaust pipe
  • A leaking valve-cover gasket
  • Oil spilled while topping up
  • Overfilling the system with oil

How to diagnose it?

Look under the bonnet and search for traces of oil on hot components. Also check whether there are stains under the car and whether you overfilled the oil while topping up.

An oil leak is worth fixing before it leads to a bigger failure or loss. We’ll locate the source during the oil change and inspection.
