For some drivers it is just a routine reminder that says “service in 1500 km”, while for others it is a sacred oracle that must never be questioned. The truth sits somewhere in the middle: the service counter is a useful signpost, but it does not know your car better than you do. It is worth understanding on what basis the on-board computer calculates the oil change date, what it takes into account, and what it simply cannot measure. Once you grasp that, you stop treating the service message as a rigid order and start making informed decisions about when the oil really needs changing.

What does the service counter take into account?

In that case the reading is more of a rough guide, because it cannot tell calm motorway cruising apart from daily crawling through city traffic jams. That is the first reason not to trust every message blindly, without a moment of thought about your own conditions.
Fixed service versus flexible service
In practice you will meet two approaches to calculating the change date. A fixed service, also called a time-based service, is a simple, rigid interval — for example every 15,000 km or once a year, whichever comes first. A flexible service relies on an algorithm that sets the date itself based on sensor data and can stretch the change out as far as 30,000 km. It is precisely this second variant, the extended service intervals, that raises the most questions and doubts among drivers who want to protect their engine.
A fixed service is less “intelligent”, but in return it is completely predictable and easy to keep an eye on. A flexible service adapts better to reality, yet its effectiveness stands and falls with the quality of the data and the quality of the oil. If a car with a flexible system is filled with a cheap oil that lacks the correct approval, the computer will still count the interval as though a top-class product were working inside — and that is a direct route to premature ageing of the oil and damage to the engine over time.
So which scheme should you choose? For a driver who mostly covers city routes, short distances and mixed conditions, a fixed service with a shorter interval is usually safer and more relaxing to live with. A flexible service truly shines where the car covers mainly steady, longer routes — there the algorithm has genuine room to extend the interval without harming the unit. The key is an honest assessment of your own driving profile, not the convenience of a low number printed in a brochure.
Can you fully trust the service counter?
In a typically used car — calm driving, mostly longer routes, good oil and a healthy engine — the counter is a genuinely good indicator, and you can rely on it without much concern. The trouble begins where the real conditions diverge from the ideal scenario assumed by the algorithm. No computer measures the condition of the oil directly; it merely estimates it from indirect sensor data, and that always leaves room for error the driver never sees on the display.
The hardest conditions for oil are short trips, driving in traffic jams, running on LPG and constantly loading the car. In such conditions the oil degrades faster than the computer can precisely detect, so the driver sees “5000 km left until the change” on the display even though the oil already needs replacing. That is why, in demanding use, and especially where short trips dominate, it is safer to change the oil earlier than the computer indicates and to treat its reading with a healthy dose of caution.
The service counter is a signpost, not a verdict. It knows your kilometres, but it does not know the conditions in which you actually drive every day.
When to change the oil earlier than the counter shows
There are situations in which it is worth treating the counter reading as an upper limit rather than a firm deadline. The common denominator of all these cases is that the engine works harder than the algorithm's “ideal” scenario assumes, and the oil wears out faster than the computer is able to reflect in its calculation of the remaining distance.

Can the counter show a change too early or too late?

Do you need to reset the counter after topping up the oil?
No. The service counter is reset only after a full change of oil and filter, not after simply topping up to the correct level. A top-up merely makes up the shortfall, but it does not refresh the properties of the oil already working in the engine, so the date calculated by the computer stays unchanged until an actual, complete change. Resetting after every top-up would give a false picture and throw the whole service cycle out of step.
Does the service counter measure oil quality?
Not directly, and this is the most common misunderstanding among drivers. Most production cars have no sensor that checks the base number, the soot content or how far the oil has been diluted with fuel. The computer only observes the engine operating conditions and models the expected wear from them. That is a good approximation, but it remains an approximation — if the real conditions differ from the model, or an oil of a different class than the manufacturer assumed is working inside, the result can miss reality by several thousand kilometres.
I changed the oil myself — what happens with the counter?
A do-it-yourself change reports nothing to the computer, so the counter has to be reset by hand. In many models a simple sequence of buttons on the dashboard is enough; in newer cars a diagnostic tester is often needed. If you skip this step, nobody at the next service will read the real oil mileage from memory, and a few months later you will not be sure yourself whether the message refers to fresh oil or to old oil. Good practice is to write the date and mileage of the change in the service book, regardless of what the display shows.
When should you ignore the counter and change the oil at once?
The reading loses its meaning whenever the oil may have been contaminated or overheated. Change it without looking at the computer after a repair to the cooling system, after a turbocharger failure, after water has got into the engine, and also when the oil on the dipstick is milky, thin or smells strongly of fuel. Can a flexible service be switched to a fixed one?
In many VAG group cars, and in some models from other brands, this can be done with a diagnostic tester — the workshop changes the setting in the controller and the counter starts counting a rigid interval instead of a date worked out by the algorithm. Drivers who mostly cover city routes often decide on such a change, because a shorter and predictable cycle suits their real conditions far better. Remember, though, that in a car still under warranty it is worth agreeing any such modification with the authorised service in advance, so you do not risk a dispute about keeping to the manufacturer schedule.
