This genuinely surprises many drivers who think: “I barely drive at all, so the oil is still as good as new.” In this article we explain why the city in particular shortens oil life so much and how to match the interval to this driving style.
The problem affects a huge group of drivers: the commute, the shops or the school run are most often short, few-minute stretches with numerous stops. Over a year this adds up to few kilometres, but each of them loads the oil far more than a calm kilometre on the open road. That is why mileage alone can be a misleading indicator — what counts is how and where those kilometres are covered. A “garage” car, only ever taken on short hops around the neighbourhood, can tire the oil more than one covering twice as much but on a calm route.
Why does the city harm the oil?
On a short distance the engine often doesn’t reach its optimal operating temperature. As a result, water condenses in the oil, unburnt fuel builds up, and the oil loses its lubricating properties faster.

The key issue is the lack of full warming up. Oil reaches its best properties only at operating temperature, after a dozen or so minutes of driving. On a short stretch it barely warms up, so the water vapour from combustion doesn’t manage to evaporate from it, and unburnt fuel that slips past the pistons stays in the sump and dilutes the oil. Diluted and moisture-laden oil lubricates worse and ages faster.
On top of this come frequent starts. Every engine start, especially a cold one, is the moment of greatest wear, because the oil hasn’t yet reached all the components. In city driving there are many times more such starts than on the open road, which additionally loads both the oil and the engine itself. In winter all these phenomena intensify further, because the oil stays thick longer and water condensation is greater.
Fuel dilution — the most dangerous effect
Of all the processes at work in the city, the most dangerous is dilution of the oil with fuel. During the start and running of a cold engine the mixture is enriched, and some of the fuel doesn’t burn completely and runs down the cylinder walls into the sump. In a warm engine this fuel mostly evaporates back out, but on a short stretch the oil doesn’t reach the temperature that allows evaporation — so the fuel stays in it and accumulates.
The effects are twofold. First, fuel lowers the oil’s viscosity, so it lubricates worse and protects the most loaded parts, such as the bearings or the turbocharger, less well. Second, a rising oil level on the dipstick — above maximum — is a typical sign of heavy dilution that must not be ignored. In extreme cases an excess of diluted oil threatens the engine more than a shortage of it.
In diesels the problem is even more pronounced, because on top of it comes fuel dilution during particulate-filter regeneration. If short trips prevent the regeneration from finishing, an extra dose of fuel ends up in the sump. That is why a diesel driven solely in the city is especially demanding and needs frequent changes of oil of the right specification.
How often to change with city driving?
With predominantly city driving, a sensible interval is 7,000–10,000 km, and with very short trips even more often. The rule of a yearly change regardless of mileage is also helpful.
It is worth treating the factory maximum interval as a value for “laboratory” conditions, that is calm motorway driving. City driving is almost always classified by manufacturers as severe use, for which shortening the interval is recommended. In practice this means sticking to the lower end of the guidance, or even shortening it further if your trips are very short and covered mostly with a cold engine.
The time criterion matters here as much as the kilometres. Even if you don’t clock up the assumed mileage over a year, the oil will still age chemically and become saturated with moisture. So for a car driven little but in short bursts, a change once a year is the absolute minimum, regardless of what the odometer shows. It is precisely the time criterion that most often decides the change date in cars used solely in town.
City versus open road — why such a difference
To understand the problem well, it helps to compare two extreme scenarios. A car covering tens of kilometres a day on the open road, at a steady speed, keeps the engine and oil at their optimal temperature for most of the drive. Water and fuel evaporate from the oil continuously, and the number of starts is small. In such a car the oil can comfortably last a full, or even extended, interval.
A city car works exactly the opposite way: lots of starts, short stretches, frequent stops in traffic and rarely reaching operating temperature. The same engine, the same oil, yet incomparably harsher conditions. That is why two identical cars with similar annual mileage can need an oil change at completely different intervals — what decides is not the number of kilometres but their character.
This difference can be surprising, but it has a simple explanation: oil tires not from driving itself, but from cycles of warming and cooling, condensation and dilution. Short trips maximise the number of these unfavourable cycles per kilometre covered. In other words, a kilometre in the city “costs” the oil far more than a kilometre on the open road, which is why with this driving style you simply have to change it more often, despite the seemingly low mileage on the clock.
How to limit the damage with city driving
You can’t always change your driving style, but a few habits genuinely help. The simplest is, every now and then, to cover a longer, half-hour out-of-town route that lets the engine and oil warm up properly and evaporate the accumulated moisture and fuel. Such “ventilation” of the oil from time to time noticeably slows its degradation.
It is also worth avoiding switching the engine off right after starting and covering absurdly short stretches you could walk. The key, though, is choosing the right oil with the proper approval and keeping to a shortened interval — these protect the engine most effectively with this usage profile. A good-quality synthetic oil copes with tough city conditions better than cheaper substitutes.
It also helps to plan trips so as to combine several errands into one longer drive instead of several separate short ones. Every time the engine manages to warm up fully, the oil regains some of its condition by evaporating accumulated moisture and fuel. It is a small change of habit that, over a year, genuinely eases the load on the oil and engine, and incidentally saves the fuel used on repeatedly starting a cold unit.
It is also a good idea to check the oil level and condition on the dipstick periodically. With city driving it is worth looking under the bonnet more often than usual, paying attention to colour, smell and whether the level is rising. Catching fuel dilution of the oil early lets you react in good time, before it translates into accelerated engine wear.
Do short trips harm a new car too?
Yes, the mechanism is the same regardless of the car’s age. A new engine copes better with tough conditions, but oil dilution with fuel and water condensation happen just the same. In modern cars, especially with a particulate filter, short trips can even be more problematic, because they prevent the filter regeneration from finishing and promote oil dilution. That is why even in a brand-new car it is worth consistently keeping to a shorter interval.
How can you tell the oil is worn out?
The most common signs are very dark, thin oil on the dipstick, a noticeable smell of fuel, an oil level rising above maximum and a louder-running engine when cold. In city driving these symptoms appear sooner than the mileage would suggest. If you notice them, it isn’t worth waiting for a “round” figure — better to change the oil right away.
Is it worth using a lower-viscosity oil in the city?
It is not about changing the viscosity on your own, but about sticking to the one recommended by the manufacturer. Oils with a low winter number, such as 0W or 5W, reach the engine parts faster after a start, which is especially valuable with frequent cold starts. The key, though, is that the chosen oil falls within your car’s specification — arbitrarily lowering the viscosity can do more harm than good.
Does the oil filter need changing more often too?
The filter is always changed together with the oil, so if you shorten the oil-change interval, you automatically change the filter more often too. That is good, because in tough city conditions the oil gets dirty faster and the filter fills up sooner. You should never leave an old filter with fresh oil — a common mistake that undoes the benefit of the change.
Can you avoid shortening the interval at all?
If your driving is almost entirely short trips, avoiding a shortened interval altogether isn’t realistic — it is simply the nature of such use. You can, however, ease the problem with regular longer routes and good-quality oil. Treat the shortened interval not as a needless whim but as a sensible, cheap price for real engine protection in conditions that are genuinely hard on it.
