It tells you how the oil behaves in two extreme situations: during a cold start on a frosty morning and at the full operating temperature of a warmed-up engine. What is an SAE viscosity grade?
Viscosity is, in the simplest terms, the resistance with which oil flows — the thicker the oil, the harder it pours and the more slowly it reaches the mating parts. The SAE J300 standard organises this parameter into a handful of grades, so that drivers and mechanics can compare different products unambiguously. The catch is that oil viscosity depends heavily on temperature: the very same oil is as thick as honey in hard frost and as thin as water once the engine reaches operating temperature. That is why a single viscosity figure is not enough — two are needed.
And that is exactly where the marking with two numbers separated by the letter W comes from. Oils described this way are called multigrade oils, because they work correctly both in winter and in summer. In the days of single-grade oils, a thinner oil was poured in for winter and a thicker one for summer. Modern multigrade oils combine both behaviours in one product, so that 5W30 protects the engine all year round without a seasonal change.
“5W” — how the oil behaves when cold
The first part of the marking, “5W”, describes how the oil behaves when cold. The letter W stands for Winter, and that is the key to remembering the whole system. The number before the W tells you how easily the oil pours at low temperatures — the lower it is, the more fluid the oil stays in harder frost, the more easily the engine starts in winter, and the faster oil pressure builds up after start-up.

“30” — viscosity at high temperature
The second number, in this case “30”, describes the viscosity of the oil once it has warmed up, at an engine operating temperature of around 100 degrees Celsius. The higher this number, the thicker the oil stays when hot and the thicker the film it maintains between the parts. When hot, the oil must be neither too thin nor too thick: too thin, and it separates the metal surfaces less effectively and protects worse against friction; too thick, and it creates needless resistance, raises fuel consumption and hinders flow.
A value of “30” is a typical, all-round compromise for most modern passenger-car engines — it provides good protection while keeping internal resistance low, which helps fuel economy. Heavier, more heavily loaded or older units are sometimes designed for a thicker oil, for example a grade 40. That does not mean a thicker oil is “better” — it is simply different and suits different designs.
How to choose the right viscosity for your engine
The most important rule is simple: viscosity is not chosen by eye or “by feel”, but strictly according to the vehicle manufacturer’s recommendations. It is the engine designer who knows the clearances between the parts, which oil pump is fitted and which oil the whole unit was designed for. You will find the correct grade in the owner’s manual or the service book, often with permitted variants depending on the climate.

Pouring in an oil of a different viscosity than the manufacturer intended rarely ends in an immediate breakdown, but over the long term it can do harm. Oil that is too thick when cold, for example 10W where 5W was recommended, reaches the top of the engine more slowly after start-up, which prolongs the most dangerous, almost-dry phase of operation. When hot, oil that is too thick creates more resistance, raises fuel consumption and needlessly loads the oil pump.
Oil that is too thin when hot, on the other hand, may fail to maintain a sufficient lubricating film in a heavily loaded, warmed-up engine, which translates into faster wear. The most common dilemma drivers face concerns neighbouring grades, that is the difference between 5W30 and 5W40 — both oils start identically when cold, but differ in thickness when hot, so they may not always be used interchangeably.
5W30 and other popular viscosity grades
On the market you will meet a whole range of grades, from very thin fuel-saving oils to thick oils for high-output units. Oils of even lower viscosity, such as 0W20, are becoming ever more popular, designed for modern, economical petrol engines and hybrids, where minimal friction and low fuel consumption matter. Such an oil must not be poured in everywhere, though — it suits only the engines designed for it.

Is 5W30 a synthetic oil?
The marking 5W30 on its own tells you only about viscosity, not about the type of oil base. This grade is available both as fully synthetic and as semi-synthetic oils, although modern 5W30 with manufacturer approvals is almost always a synthetic product. The type of base and the specific approval matter more here than the slogan on the pack.
Can I use 5W40 instead of 5W30?
Only when your engine manufacturer permits both grades.
