Synthetic or semi-synthetic oil — which to choose?

Synthetic or semi-synthetic oil — it’s one of drivers’ most common questions. The choice affects engine protection, change intervals and running costs. In this article we explain what really sets these oils apart, which cars they are meant for and why the deciding factor is not “synthetic versus semi-synthetic” but compliance with the engine maker’s recommendations.

How do they differ?

Synthetic oil is produced in a chemical process, giving it more stable properties across a wide temperature range. Semi-synthetic is a blend of mineral and synthetic base — cheaper, but less resistant.

The difference lies above all in the base oil, that is the foundation the finished product is built on. Synthetic oil is made of uniform, precisely engineered molecules, which gives it predictable and stable behaviour. Mineral oil, the basis of cheaper products, is refined crude with a more varied structure. Semi-synthetic combines both bases, trying to reconcile decent quality with a lower price, but it doesn’t match full synthetic in terms of durability and resistance to extreme conditions.

In practice this translates into a few concrete properties. Synthetic ages more slowly, copes better with high temperatures without oxidising, stays fluid in hard frost and protects the engine more effectively right after the start. Semi-synthetic performs decently in moderate conditions, but under heavy loads and long intervals it loses its parameters faster. That is why modern, highly stressed units almost always require full synthetic oil, without compromise.

Where the differences come from in practice

To understand better why synthetic costs more, it helps to know what happens to oil during engine operation. The oil is constantly heated to high temperatures, sheared between working parts and exposed to combustion products. In these conditions the cheaper mineral base oxidises faster, thickens and loses its lubricating properties. A uniform synthetic base withstands the same loads for much longer, keeping a stable viscosity.

On top of this comes cold behaviour. Synthetic stays fluid even in hard frost, so from the first seconds after the start it reaches the furthest corners of the engine and protects it before the oil pressure fully builds up. Cold, thick mineral oil flows more slowly, which makes the engine’s first moments the hardest for it. It is precisely there — on frosty mornings and just after the start — that the synthetic’s advantage is most keenly felt, and most engine wear arises at exactly this moment.

When synthetic, and when semi-synthetic

The simplified split looks like this: synthetic for newer, highly stressed and demanding cars, semi-synthetic for older, simpler designs with moderate requirements. Engines with turbocharging, direct injection, a particulate filter or a start-stop system practically always need full synthetic with the right approval. Pouring semi-synthetic into them would be a step down a class and could shorten the unit’s life. Makers of such engines expressly state in the documentation the minimum required oil specification, which must not be lowered under any circumstances.

Semi-synthetic, on the other hand, makes sense in older petrol cars without sophisticated electronics and with lower demands on oil quality. It can also be a practical choice in very high-mileage cars that use a little oil anyway — more frequent top-ups with a cheaper product can then be economical. The key, though, is that even a cheaper oil meets the standard required by the manufacturer, rather than simply being “the cheapest on the shelf”.

It is worth debunking the popular myth that in an old engine it is “a waste” to pour in good oil. It is quite the opposite — a healthy, even if elderly, engine also benefits from better protection. The limit is not the car’s age but the specific requirements of the manufacturer and the possible poor condition of a heavily neglected unit. In practice most drivers make a mistake not by using oil that is “too good”, but by using one that is too cheap and wrongly chosen, one that doesn’t meet their engine’s requirements.

It isn’t about whether the oil is “synthetic”, but whether it meets the standard and approval specified by the maker of your engine.

Which to choose for your car?

The most important thing is the manufacturer’s recommendations — they define the required quality and approvals. Modern engines almost always require synthetic oil. For older, high-mileage designs a dedicated high mileage oil is sometimes better.

It is worth stressing something many drivers overlook: the split into synthetic and semi-synthetic is secondary to the specific standard and approval. It is the viscosity (e.g. 5W30) and the manufacturer approvals (such as VW, BMW or Mercedes) that decide whether a given oil is right. You can buy an expensive, reputable synthetic that still won’t meet your engine’s specific requirements — and then it will be a poor choice despite the high price. That is why the starting point should always be the service book, not a marketing slogan on the can. The word “synthetic” on the pack does not replace checking the specific standard required for your model.

Price versus real running cost

At first glance semi-synthetic looks cheaper, and that often settles the choice. It is worth looking at the total running cost, though, not just the price of the can. Synthetic usually allows longer change intervals and protects the engine better, so per kilometre the difference is smaller than it seems. In a modern car, saving on oil can bite back with a costly repair that far exceeds the difference in oil price. A few dozen zlotys saved on the can mean nothing against the price of repairing a turbo or the timing gear.

On the other hand, in a simple, older car, overpaying for the most expensive premium synthetic makes little sense if the manufacturer only requires an ordinary specification. The art, then, is to hit the mark exactly: choose an oil of the right class and approval, neither too weak nor excessively expensive. That is why a conscious choice, based on the engine’s requirements, almost always works out cheaper than being guided solely by price or solely by brand prestige. A well-chosen oil is simply one that exactly matches the engine’s real needs — no less, no more.

Can you mix synthetic with semi-synthetic?

As a stopgap, in an emergency, topping up with a different type of oil of the same viscosity won’t destroy the engine — it is better to add “something” than to drive on too low an oil level. It is not a permanent solution, though. A blend has averaged, worse properties than a uniform high-class oil, and on top of that it is hard to control whether it meets the required approval. So treat it as a rescue to reach a service, not a norm. It is best to always carry a spare litre of oil in the boot of exactly the kind you have in the engine.

At a planned change it is always worth returning to a single, correctly chosen oil and replacing it in full together with the filter. This gives you the certainty that the engine runs on a product with uniform, known parameters, in line with the manufacturer’s recommendations. Regular changes with the same, correct oil are far healthier for the engine than constantly experimenting with different products between services.

Is synthetic always better than semi-synthetic?

In terms of pure base quality and resistance — yes, synthetic is a higher-class product. But “better” here means “better matched to the car”, not “most expensive”. In a modern engine synthetic is the only sensible choice, while in a simple, older car a good-quality semi-synthetic is quite enough and cheaper to run. The worst choice, by contrast, is a cheap oil that meets no specific standard — and it is this, not semi-synthetic as such, that really harms engines. So the right question is not “synthetic or semi-synthetic”, but “which standard and viscosity for my car”.

Does switching from semi-synthetic to synthetic harm the engine?

In most cars there is no problem with it — switching to a better synthetic oil with the right approval is safe and beneficial. Caution is advised only in very high-mileage, neglected engines, where a better detergent oil may wash out deposits and reveal leaks. In such cases it is worth consulting the oil choice with a mechanic, but the principle “better oil does no harm” still holds.

Do you have to use synthetic in an old car?

Not always — it depends on what the manufacturer requires and the engine’s condition. If an ordinary specification was specified at the factory and the car has no sophisticated electronics, a good-quality semi-synthetic is quite enough. In engines with very high mileage that lightly “use” oil, a dedicated high mileage oil with additives caring for the seals often works well. The key is to stick to the viscosity and approval recommended for the given model, rather than follow a fashion for the “strongest” oil.

How can you tell the wrong oil was used?

The symptoms can be subtle, but worth knowing. Oil that is too weak or wrongly chosen can show up as a louder-running engine, harder cold starts, a faster drop in the dipstick level or the oil pressure light coming on. In modern diesels the wrong oil can also clog the particulate filter. If something clearly changed for the worse after a change, it is worth verifying whether the oil used really met the engine’s requirements. The surest solution is then another change to an oil exactly compliant with the approval stated by the manufacturer.
