Instead, the oil level is measured by an electronic sensor in the sump, and the result is shown by the on-board computer in a dashboard menu. It’s a convenient solution, but it has its pitfalls worth knowing about before you first trust it instead of a dipstick. The electronics tell you only about the quantity of oil, not its condition.
Why manufacturers are dropping the dipstick
The disappearance of the dipstick from new cars isn’t chance or a saving on one little rod. Several real design reasons came together, worth knowing to understand how to handle the new measurement.
- Cramped engine bays — modern cars often lack room for a dipstick tube
- Transverse engines and covers under the bonnet — physical access to the sump can be difficult
- Integration with the electronics — the car constantly monitors the level itself and actively warns the driver
- System tightness — fewer openings means less risk of drawing in contaminants from outside
The upshot for the driver, though, is that you can no longer pull out a dipstick in five seconds and simply look at the oil. You have to trust the electronics, and they have real limitations. That makes it all the more important to understand how to take the measurement correctly and what the sensor simply can’t see.
How the measurement works
The sensor measures the height of the oil column in the sump and converts it into a level. The reading is reliable only when the conditions are met: level ground, a warmed engine and a few minutes’ pause after switching it off.
Most cars use a thermal or capacitive sensor placed in the sump. A thermal sensor exploits the different way oil and air conduct heat: a heated resistance wire cools faster where it is submerged in oil and slower where air surrounds it. From this the electronics work out how high the oil reaches. That’s why the measurement needs a warmed engine and a moment of calm — cold oil and a surface still sloshing after driving would falsify the result.
This principle also explains why the reading isn’t instant and calls for patience. After you start the measurement, the computer needs anywhere from a dozen to several dozen seconds for the sensor to stabilise its temperature and give a reliable value. Rushing and reading “on the move”, right after stopping, is the most common cause of wrong readings that then needlessly worry the driver.
How to measure the level correctly
- Park the car on level, flat ground
- Warm the engine to full operating temperature
- Switch the engine off and wait a few minutes for the oil to drain into the sump
- Start the oil level measurement in the car’s on-board menu
- Wait patiently until the computer finishes the whole reading
What the sensor won’t tell you
- It won’t show the colour or consistency of the oil
- It won’t detect a milky emulsion, water or metal shavings
- On sloping ground it can clearly over- or under-read
- A faulty sensor will show a value with no basis in reality
- It won’t replace checking oil pressure, which is a separate parameter
That’s why the condition of the oil — colour, thickness, any milky film or shavings — is still worth assessing by eye during the change.
This is the most important limitation of the electronic measurement. The dipstick, for all its simplicity, gave the driver something the sensor cannot: direct contact with the oil. Pulling out the dipstick, you saw at once whether the oil was amber and clean or black and tarry, whether there was no creamy emulsion indicating water in the system, and rubbing it between the fingers revealed any particles. The sensor gives only a number — the amount of oil, nothing more.
So in a car without a dipstick, timely changes and having a mechanic inspect the oil at the same time matter even more. Since you can’t look the oil “in the eye” day to day, you have to trust it through the lens of regular servicing and reacting to the computer’s messages.
A good practice is to check the level through the menu roughly every two or three fill-ups — just as you once looked with the dipstick. It takes a moment, yet it lets you catch a slow loss of oil before the computer even displays a warning. In engines that like to consume oil, such a routine is especially valuable.
The sensor measures how much oil there is. How good it is, is still decided by the change interval.
When to react immediately
Take a low-oil-level message seriously and top up the level. A red oil pressure warning light is a completely different, far more serious signal — an order to stop at once.
It’s worth telling these two signals apart, because in cars without a dipstick they’re easy to confuse. An oil-level message is information: you have time, you’ll reach home or the garage, you just need to top up the oil at some point. The oil pressure light, usually red and shaped like an oil can, means the oil isn’t being pumped at the right pressure — and that risks seizing the engine within tens of seconds. With it there’s no room for “I’ll make it”: stop and switch the engine off.
The paradox is that the engine can have a correct oil level shown by the sensor and yet the pressure light comes on — for example with a faulty oil pump or a clogged filter. That’s why the pressure light always takes priority over the level message. The amount of oil and the oil pressure are two different things.
When the sensor is wrong or fails
An electronic sensor, like any component, can fail. The most dangerous thing is that a faulty sensor doesn’t always stop working entirely — sometimes it simply gives a wrong value the driver takes for the truth. So it’s worth knowing the symptoms suggesting the measurement has stopped being reliable.
- Readings jump or change from measurement to measurement despite the same, correct conditions
- The computer stubbornly shows a full level though the car clearly consumes oil
- A sensor error message or “measurement temporarily unavailable” appears
- The level doesn’t react at all to a top-up or to draining the oil at a change
In such a case don’t ignore the problem and don’t assume in advance that since the computer shows a full level, all is well. Until it’s repaired, treat the readings with caution, pay more attention to how the engine runs and, if possible, ask for a level check during servicing or an oil change. Replacing the sensor itself is often simple, but driving with a false, over-read value risks running unnoticed on too low an oil level.
Too little and too much — both states are dangerous
The electronic measurement has one important advantage the classic dipstick doesn’t: it can actively warn not only of too low but also of too high an oil level. Both these states are genuinely harmful to the engine, though for entirely different reasons.
Too low a level means the pump may draw in air instead of oil, and the furthest components, like the turbine and camshafts, are under-lubricated, which risks accelerated wear or seizure. Too high a level is equally dangerous: the spinning crankshaft starts whipping the oil into foam, which doesn’t lubricate properly, and the excess is drawn through the breather straight into the intake. In a diesel with a particulate filter, overfilling is often a sign of fuel dilution during an interrupted regeneration.
So the level message must not be ignored in either direction. If the car signals too high a level and you haven’t topped anything up, it’s most often a sign that fuel is collecting in the oil from an interrupted filter regeneration — and a clear reason to bring the change forward before the thinned oil harms the turbine and bearings. It’s one of those cases where the electronics really can warn of a serious problem.
Frequently asked questions about the oil level sensor
Can I top up the oil myself in a car without a dipstick?
Yes, but carefully and in small portions. Without a dipstick it’s easy to overfill, so add about 0.2–0.3 litre at a time, each time waiting for the computer to measure again on a warm engine. Use oil of exactly the same specification and viscosity as the oil already in the engine. It’s better to add too little and check again than to overfill straight away and then struggle with the excess.
The measurement shows something different every time. Why?
Most often because the measurement conditions weren’t met. The electronic sensor is very sensitive to the oil temperature, the car’s tilt and the time since the engine was switched off. Take the measurement on level ground, on a fully warmed engine and after a few minutes’ calm pause, and the result will be repeatable. Jumping readings on a cold engine or just after parking are the norm, not a sensor fault.
The sensor shows a full level but the engine runs loudly. Trust the electronics?
Trust the engine rather than the number on the screen. A faulty sensor can show a value with no basis in reality. If you hear a metallic noise, a warning light has come on or the level drops between measurements, check the oil regardless of the reading, at a garage if needed. The electronics are a help, but they don’t replace common sense and listening to how the engine runs.
How much oil to add in a car without a dipstick?
It depends on the lubrication system capacity of your engine, but the rule is the same: add in small portions and check. The gap between minimum and maximum is, in most cars, roughly one litre of oil, so adding a whole bottle at once risks overfilling. It’s safer to add 0.2–0.3 litre, wait for the measurement and repeat if needed.
