A battery change seems simple: two bolts and done. In practice the wrong disconnection order, a short circuit with a spanner or a skipped registration can cause trouble, from wiped electronics to a spark and a damaged module. Here is how to do it safely, step by step, and when it is better to skip the DIY route and leave it to a service.

Before you start, get the basics ready: a spanner for the terminals (usually 10 mm), gloves, possibly a memory saver and a new, correctly chosen battery. It is also worth having the car’s manual to hand, because in some models the battery sits in an unusual place and disconnecting it takes extra steps. Calm, careful work matters more here than speed — it is a dozen or so minutes you shouldn’t try to rush. It also helps to park on flat, stable ground and set the handbrake so nothing shifts while you work.

The order matters

The most important rule of a safe change concerns the order of disconnecting and connecting the terminals. When disconnecting you always start with the negative, when connecting — with the positive. That single rule guards against the most dangerous mistake, a short circuit that happens when a spanner touches both the positive and the earthed body at once.

  1. Switch off the ignition and all loads, remove the key
  2. Disconnect the negative terminal (–) first, then the positive (+)
  3. Undo the hold-down bracket and remove the old battery, minding its weight
  4. Clean the tray and terminal ends of deposits and corrosion
  5. Fit the new one and connect the positive (+) first, then the negative (–)
  6. Tighten the terminals and secure the battery in its clamp

The logic is simple: the negative is the earth connected to the whole body. Once you disconnect it first, the circuit is already broken and even accidentally touching a spanner from the positive to the bodywork does no harm. If you started with the positive and the spanner slipped onto the metal, you would get a violent short with a spark, a burnt tool and, in the worst case, damage to the wiring or electronic modules. When connecting, the order is reversed for the same reason — you leave the negative until last, once the positive is firmly tightened, so while you work on the positive the earth stays disconnected and a short is impossible.

The most common mistakes

  • Reversing the terminal order and shorting a tool against the body
  • The wrong battery type (flooded instead of AGM in start-stop)
  • No registration of the new battery in cars that require it
  • Skipping the memory saver — losing settings
  • Under-tightened terminals — voltage drops and starting problems
  • An unsecured battery that rattles around while driving

Each of these mistakes can wipe out the benefit of a DIY change. The wrong battery type in a start-stop car will wear out within a few to a dozen months, a loose terminal causes hard starting and flickering lights, and an unsecured battery can tip over or get damaged at the first harder braking. These are small things that are easy to forget, yet they decide whether the change works out. It is worth treating the list above as a checklist and ticking off every point before you close the bonnet and call the job done.

How to choose the right battery

The most common mistake in a DIY change is not the technique itself but the choice of battery. The new one has to match the car on several counts: type (flooded, EFB or AGM), capacity in amp-hours, starting current, case dimensions and terminal layout. A mistake in any of these ends with a wrongly chosen battery that either won’t fit the tray, or wears out fast, or won’t start the car on a frosty morning.

The simplest approach is to read the data off the old battery and replicate it one to one, remembering that in a start-stop car you must not step back from AGM to an ordinary battery. Also mind the polarity, that is which side the positive is on — the opposite layout means the cables simply won’t reach the terminals. If in doubt, it is better to ask the seller or a service than to buy by guesswork.

What to prepare before the change

  • A spanner for the terminals and the battery mount (usually 10 and 13 mm)
  • Protective gloves and possibly goggles
  • A memory saver or a spare 12 V source
  • A brush and a terminal-cleaning product
  • A correctly chosen new battery and the radio code, if required

Getting these things ready in advance means the change goes calmly and without improvising. The worst scenario is a job half taken apart and the sudden realisation that the right spanner is missing or that the new battery has reversed polarity. A few minutes spent gathering the tools saves a lot of stress and guards against the temptation to cut corners.

Registration and keeping the settings

In start-stop cars there is also registering the new battery, and when disconnecting it is worth using a memory saver so you don’t reset the settings. Without registration the charging system treats the fresh battery like an old one and undercharges it, which shortens its life and spoils how start-stop works.

A memory saver is a small power supply or a second battery plugged in for the duration of the change, so the computers don’t lose power. Without it you can lose a coded radio’s settings, window positions, the air-conditioning settings and sometimes the learned parameters of the gearbox or engine. In newer cars, reconfiguring these can be a nuisance and require a visit to a service, which is why this simple step often saves plenty of hassle.

Safety and disposal

A battery is not an ordinary part — it contains acid and lead, it is heavy and its terminals are live. Work in gloves, don’t lean over the battery with your face, avoid sparks and open flame nearby, because the cells can give off flammable hydrogen. When you lift the old battery out, hold it upright and firmly so you don’t spill electrolyte or strain your back, because even a small battery weighs over a dozen kilograms.

A worn battery must not go in the ordinary bin — it is hazardous waste and at the same time a valuable recyclable material. You can hand it in at a battery retailer, at a recycling point or give it to the service during the change. In many shops, returning the old battery lowers the price of the new one or lets you avoid a deposit fee, so its legal disposal can also pay off. Until you hand it over, keep the old battery upright, in a dry and cool place, away from children and any stray metal objects that could accidentally short its two terminals.

After the change: what to check

Once the new battery is fitted and firmly tightened, start the car and let it run for a moment. Check that no charging warning light is on, reset the clock and radio, and if needed reconfigure the window or sunroof positions if they lost their calibration. This is a good moment to make sure everything works before you put the tools away.

It is also worth checking the charging voltage — at the terminals with the engine running it should be around 13.8–14.4 V. If it is clearly lower, the problem may lie not in the battery but in the alternator, and then even a new battery will run flat fast. After a few days of driving, note whether the car starts as confidently as at the beginning — that is the best signal that the change and the choice worked out.

Does disconnecting the battery clear fault codes?

It may clear some stored settings and so-called adaptations, but it is not a way to permanently remove a fault. If a warning light is on in the car, it will most likely come back after connecting the new battery, because its cause still exists. Disconnecting the earth is often confused with a "reset", whereas real fault clearing is done with a diagnostic tester after the problem has been fixed.

How long does a DIY change take?

In a typical car, where the battery is easy to reach, it is a dozen or so minutes of calm work. More time goes on preparation, choosing the right battery and any registration. If the battery is hidden under a seat, in the boot or beneath covers, the change can take longer and calls for more care so as not to damage the surrounding parts. In practice it is the choice and the paperwork, not the actual spannering of the terminals, that usually take the most time.

Do I have to register the battery in an older car?

In cars without a start-stop system registration is usually not needed — the charging system does not "learn" the battery’s state and doesn’t need to be told about the change. Registration mainly concerns newer start-stop cars with recuperation, where the computer manages charging depending on the battery’s condition. If you are not sure whether your car requires it, the battery seller or a service can tell you after checking the model.

What if I lose confidence?

If at any stage you have doubts — about the battery type, the terminal order, the polarity or the registration — it is better to stop and ask than to act on a hunch. A mistake with a battery can be costly, and a mobile service can come out and finish the change safely, with the right battery and full handling of the electronics. Sometimes that is the most sensible option, especially when the car is already immobilised.
