It’s not dangerous and doesn’t mean a fault, but it’s worth knowing what to expect, so a blank radio screen or a flashing clock after the change doesn’t take you by surprise.
In this article we explain exactly what gets lost after disconnecting the battery, what the reset doesn’t affect, how to keep all your settings during the change thanks to a memory saver, and what’s worth doing once the new battery is connected. We also explain why in newer cars the change itself isn’t the end — battery registration comes into play.
Why a reset happens at all
A modern car is a network of dozens of control units, many of which store settings and data in volatile memory, kept alive by a constant, small voltage from the battery. When we disconnect the battery, these modules lose power and “forget” some information — much like a computer that suddenly lost power. Data saved in permanent (non-volatile) memory stays, but what was held temporarily disappears.
That’s why the scope of the reset depends on the specific car and its equipment. In an older, simple car, disconnecting the battery means at most a flashing clock. In a modern, electronics-packed car it can mean losing many small settings and needing to perform a few adaptations. None of it is dangerous, but it can be a nuisance — which is why a memory saver, described below, is used more and more often.

It’s worth stressing that losing these settings is an inconvenience, not a fault. None of these resets means damage to the car — everything can be set again in a few minutes, and most adaptations “come back” on their own after a few driving cycles. Panic at the sight of messages after a change is therefore completely unnecessary.
What is NOT lost
Key data, such as the key coding or stored engine adaptations, is usually saved permanently and doesn’t disappear after disconnection. The biggest “hassle” is usually resetting the clock and radio.
You don’t have to worry about the things that really matter. The immobiliser and key coding, the VIN saved in the control units, the odometer reading and the basic engine maps are stored in non-volatile memory and remain untouched. After a battery change the car will start normally and won’t “forget” that it’s your car.

It’s worth knowing, though, that some “on the fly” adaptations — for example how the throttle or automatic gearbox is tuned to your driving style — may partly reset and rebuild over the next few kilometres. Sometimes for a while after the change the car runs slightly differently, then returns to normal. This is natural, not a fault.
How to keep your settings
To avoid a reset, a memory saver is used during the change — an additional power source connected while the old battery is disconnected. That way the electronics don’t lose power even for a moment.
In practice it’s a small auxiliary battery or power supply connected to the 12 V socket or directly to the cables before we disconnect the old battery. It keeps voltage in the wiring throughout the change, so the control units don’t lose power for even a second and keep all their settings. It’s a standard applied at every change in a professional mobile service, especially in newer, heavily electronics-packed cars. For the driver it means the most convenient possible scenario: they drive off with the car in exactly the state they left it.
The method has one more advantage: it protects against a situation where, after power is cut, some control unit throws an error and then needs diagnostics. In most cars nothing like that will happen, but in some models with sensitive electronics a memory saver is simply safer and cheaper than fixing the consequences later.
A battery change doesn’t “break” the car — at most you have to reset the clock. And with a memory saver even that goes away.
What to do after connecting the new battery
If the change was done without a memory saver, it’s worth restoring the most important settings one by one after connecting the new battery. It usually takes a few minutes and lets you use the car comfortably straight away.

- Enter the radio code if your car needs it, and restore the station list
- Perform the window and sunroof adaptation (hold the switch at the end positions)
- Check the on-board computer settings and reset any statistics you need
- In start-stop cars, register the new battery in the computer
The last point is key in newer cars. Registration (coding) tells the energy management system there’s a new battery in the car, so charging adapts to its parameters. Skipping this step shortens the new battery’s life, because the alternator still “thinks” it’s dealing with a worn battery and charges it incorrectly.
Can you change the battery without losing settings yourself
There are simple memory-saver accessories, for example a device plugged into the cigarette-lighter socket and powered from a second battery or a power bank. You do have to remember two things, though: the socket must be powered with the ignition off (which isn’t the case in every car), and throughout the change you mustn’t let the disconnected cables short.
That’s why a DIY change with a memory saver can be troublesome, especially in cars where the battery is hard to reach — hidden under a seat, in the boot or under covers. In such cases it’s more convenient and safer to leave the change to a service that arrives with the right equipment and does it without the risk of losing settings.
If you do change the battery yourself, remember the right order: when disconnecting, take off the negative terminal first, and when connecting the new battery, put it on last. This simple rule minimises the risk of shorting a tool against the bodywork and is the basis of safe work on a car’s electrical system.
Start-stop cars and sensitive electronics
In cars with start-stop and advanced energy management, a battery change is more demanding. It’s no longer just about the clock or radio — the new battery has to be registered in the computer, and often you have to fit exactly the same type (AGM or EFB) the manufacturer requires.
Without registration the charging system treats the new battery like an old one and picks charging parameters to suit its worn properties, which shortens the fresh cell’s life. So in such cars a “quick change” without coding is a false economy that can cost you another battery in a year or two. Frequently asked questions about settings after a change
Will I lose my saved radio stations and the radio code?
The station list is usually cleared and has to be saved again. In older cars with a secured radio you may also need the radio code — so it’s worth finding it in the car’s documents before the change, before we disconnect the battery. In newer cars the radio is usually tied to the car and no code is required, and by using a memory saver you avoid losing the station list at all.
Why don’t the windows auto-close in one touch after the change?
That’s a typical result of the reset — the auto-close function needs re-adaptation. Usually it’s enough to hold the switch in the “up” position for a moment after the window is fully closed, and in some cars repeat this for the “down” position. After such an adaptation the function returns to normal and the windows close in one touch again. You’ll find the exact procedure for your model in the owner’s manual.
Will disconnecting the battery clear errors from the computer?
Some momentary errors may indeed disappear, but it isn’t a proper repair method. Permanent faults will come back after a few driving cycles anyway, and disconnecting the battery is sometimes confused with sound diagnostics. If the check engine light is on, it’s better to read the fault codes with a tester and remove the cause than to count on “resetting” the problem.
How long does a battery change with a memory saver take?
The change itself is usually a dozen or so minutes. A memory saver doesn’t lengthen it significantly — it only adds connecting and disconnecting an auxiliary power source, literally a moment. It’s a small extra step that saves setting everything up again afterwards, so in practice it often shortens the total service time.
Do I need to go for diagnostics after a battery change?
In most cars no — it’s enough to set the clock and radio, and any adaptations will come back on their own. The exception is start-stop cars, where the new battery needs registering. If the change is done by a service with a tester, registration happens right there and a separate visit isn’t necessary.
Can I lose my seat and mirror settings?
In cars with seat and mirror memory, the stored positions are usually saved permanently and don’t disappear after disconnecting the battery. It can happen, though, that electrically adjusted components need a one-off calibration, for example running to their end positions. It’s rare and quick, but in very well-equipped cars it’s worth expecting and not treating as a fault.
