The symptoms are often confused with a dying battery, so it’s worth knowing them, to avoid replacing a good battery when the real cause lies somewhere else entirely.

How the alternator works and why it matters so much
The alternator is a generator driven by a belt from the engine. When the car is moving, it converts mechanical energy into electrical, powering the whole system: ignition, injection, lighting, infotainment and dozens of control units. At the same time it recharges the battery, replenishing the energy used on starting. The battery is therefore a buffer for when the car is stationary, but it’s the alternator that keeps the car alive while driving.
That’s why a faulty alternator is a more serious problem than it might seem. When it stops charging, the car draws only on the reserve stored in the battery, which usually lasts a few dozen minutes of driving before the engine stalls. Worse still, this can happen in the least convenient place, for example at a junction or on a fast road.

- A squeal or whine from the alternator bearing
- The car stalls while driving or all the electrics weaken

Characteristically, alternator symptoms appear or worsen while driving, not at starting. That’s an important clue: if the problem only affects starting and the car then drives normally, the trail leads to the battery instead. If, on the other hand, the electrics weaken while driving and the battery light comes on, we’re almost certainly dealing with the charging system.
It’s worth paying separate attention to audible symptoms. A squeal, drone or whine from under the bonnet, rising with revs, often points to worn alternator bearings. A shrill squeal on starting or accelerating, in turn, can be the effect of a slipping, loose accessory belt that isn’t driving the alternator with enough force.
How to confirm the diagnosis
The key is measuring the charging voltage: after starting the engine it should be about 13.8–14.4 V. A value close to the resting voltage (about 12.6 V or lower) means the alternator isn’t charging.
The measurement is done with an ordinary multimeter on the battery terminals. It’s worth checking the voltage in several situations: right after starting, at higher revs, and after switching on consumers such as the lights, blower and window heating. A healthy alternator will keep the voltage in the safe range even under load. If the voltage drops below about 13.5 V with consumers on, or doesn’t rise at all after starting, it’s a clear sign the alternator can’t cope.
Beware the other extreme: a voltage clearly too high, above about 14.8 V, is also worrying. It usually means a faulty voltage regulator that overcharges the battery, shortening its life and risking “boiling” the electrolyte. Both too low and too high a charging voltage are grounds for alternator diagnostics.
If a new battery dies after a few days, don’t replace it a second time — first check whether the alternator is charging at all.
What breaks in an alternator
The alternator is a durable unit, but it has wearing parts that give out over time. Most often a failure doesn’t mean replacing the whole alternator, but repairing a specific part, which is often far cheaper.
- Carbon brushes — they wear down and lose contact with the slip rings
- The voltage regulator — responsible for keeping the right voltage
- The bearings — when worn they make noise and increase turning resistance
- The rectifier diodes — their failure worsens or prevents charging
- The belt and tensioner — loose or worn, they don’t drive the alternator properly
That’s why, when you suspect the alternator, it’s worth first establishing exactly what failed. Replacing just the brushes or regulator can restore function for a fraction of the cost of a new alternator. Diagnostics let you tell a minor fault from serious damage and avoid needless spending.
Don’t confuse it with the battery
The symptoms of an alternator and a worn battery can be similar but differ in the details. A quick comparison lets you avoid replacing a good battery when the charging system is at fault.
The simplest rule is: a problem only at starting, disappearing once running, points to the battery, and a problem building up while driving to the alternator. Certainty comes from a measurement. If the terminal voltage doesn’t rise after starting, the alternator is to blame. If it rises correctly yet the car still starts poorly or the battery dies fast, the cause is the battery or a parasitic drain.
Symptoms that are easy to miss
Alternator failure doesn’t always start with the car stalling. Often the first signals are subtle and easy to dismiss. They include a slight pulsing of the lights’ brightness as the revs change, a momentary “flicker” of the dashboard backlight, or irregular blower operation. These are small things that point to unstable voltage in the system.
It also happens that the car seems to work normally, but the battery systematically discharges, which shows as an ever-heavier start from day to day. If you notice such a trend, especially with a relatively new battery, it’s worth measuring the charging voltage before you start suspecting the battery itself. Catching an alternator problem early saves not only the battery but also your nerves.
Why driving with a faulty alternator is risky
It’s tempting to keep driving “a bit longer”, since the car works for now. But it’s a gamble that usually ends badly. When the battery runs out, the engine stalls suddenly, often together with the power steering and brake assist, which can be dangerous at speed. On top of that the lighting gradually fades, which further increases the risk, especially after dark.
Faulty charging also harms the battery itself. Working in constant power shortage and deep discharges leads to plate sulfation and permanent capacity loss. As a result, a single alternator fault can drag a battery replacement along with it if the problem was ignored too long. That’s why a quick reaction is not just a matter of convenience but of real saving.
When a repair is enough and when replacement is needed
Not every alternator fault means having to buy a new unit. In many cases replacing worn brushes, the voltage regulator or bearings is enough, restoring function for a reasonable amount. A repair makes sense, though, when the body and windings themselves are in good condition and only the wearing parts have failed.
Replacing the whole alternator is considered with more serious damage, for example burnt windings or extensive diode failure. Which path is more worthwhile is decided by diagnostics and the car’s age. It’s worth remembering that a well-chosen, healthy alternator can work for hundreds of thousands more kilometres, so its repair or replacement is an investment for years.

How far can I drive on the battery alone?
It depends on the battery’s condition and capacity and on power use, but it’s usually a few dozen minutes of driving. Switching off unnecessary loads — air conditioning, radio, window and seat heating — clearly extends this time, because all the stored energy then goes to keeping the engine running. It’s only a way to reach the service, though, not to keep using the car with a faulty alternator.
Is it safe to drive with a faulty alternator?
A short drive to the service usually yes, but don’t drag it out or plan longer routes. Besides the risk of the car stalling suddenly, driving in a power shortage loads the battery with deep discharges that permanently shorten its life. The sooner you remove the cause, the smaller the risk of also “finishing off” the battery and ending up with two repairs instead of one.
Does the battery light always mean the alternator?
Most often yes — despite the misleading name it signals a charging problem, not one with the battery itself. It can point to a faulty alternator or damaged regulator, but also to a snapped or slipping accessory belt. In each of these cases it’s worth checking the charging system as soon as possible, before the car stops.
Can a faulty alternator damage the electronics?
A mere lack of charging rather not, but unstable or too high a voltage can. A faulty regulator that lets voltage spikes through can strain sensitive control units and shorten their life. It’s another reason not to ignore an incorrect charging voltage, even if the car drives without obvious symptoms for now.
Can I extend the alternator’s life?
Yes, to some extent. It helps to keep the belt at the right tension and in good condition, to avoid prolonged overloading of the system, and to react to the first symptoms such as bearing noise. A healthy battery also relieves the alternator, because it tires more when it has to keep recharging a worn, poorly holding battery of reduced capacity.
