What parasitic drain is
After you lock the car, some systems go into standby and draw a small, acceptable current (usually tens of milliamps). When a module doesn’t sleep, the draw rises and drains the battery in just a few days, even though the battery itself is perfectly healthy.
It’s worth understanding that a certain quiescent current is completely normal and nothing to worry about. In a modern car, constantly on watch are the control units’ memory, the central-locking remote receiver, the alarm and the clock. The total, correct draw is usually from a few to a few dozen milliamps — little enough that a good battery survives weeks of standing. The problem starts only when the draw is clearly higher than the manufacturer intended.
A good reference is the rule of thumb: a parasitic drain of 30–50 mA is often acceptable, but values above 80–100 mA with the car asleep are already a sign that something is drawing current when it shouldn’t. The higher the draw, the faster the battery discharges — a few hundred milliamps can “eat” a battery in two or three days. The exact acceptable values differ between models, so always treat these numbers as rough and compare them with your car’s data.

Why the problem affects modern cars more often
The more electronics, the more devices that can “fail to sleep”. A contemporary car has dozens of control units communicating over a bus, multimedia systems with constant internet access, telematics modules, keyless entry and advanced alarms. Each is a potential source of raised draw if the software “hangs” or the module is faulty.
That’s why parasitic drain tends to be a more common problem today than in older, simpler designs. It’s also harder to track down, because the culprit can be a control unit that wakes cyclically or reacts to a signal on the bus. In such cases the plain “pull the fuses” method may not be enough and diagnostics with a tester and bus observation are needed. This doesn’t change the basic principle, though: we start with the simplest, measurable steps and only then reach for more advanced tools.
Symptoms suggesting parasitic drain
Before you reach for a meter, certain symptoms themselves suggest the problem is a drain rather than the battery.
- The car won’t start after a few days’ standing, though it drove fine before
- The longer it stands, the worse — after a week the battery is completely dead
- After driving and charging, the battery goes flat again during a longer standstill
- The problem appeared after fitting a new radio, alarm or camera

The last point is key: if replacing the battery with a new one didn’t solve the problem, it’s an almost certain sign the cause lies elsewhere — precisely in parasitic drain. It’s then worth sparing yourself another battery replacement and instead measuring the actual draw while parked.
How to diagnose it
Parasitic drain is measured with an ammeter connected in series, once the car has “gone to sleep”. Then, by pulling fuses one by one, you locate the circuit responsible for the excess draw. It’s a methodical but effective procedure.
- Charge the battery and make sure it’s healthy
- Connect an ammeter in series between the terminal and the clamp (10 A range)
- Lock the car and wait for the electronics to go into sleep (even 20–40 min)
- Read the quiescent current — compare it with the norm for the car
- If too high, pull fuses one by one and watch which lowers the draw
- The identified circuit points to the device that won’t sleep
An important detail: the sleep time. Many cars keep a raised draw for the first several to several dozen minutes after locking, because the control units “talk to each other” and save data. A measurement taken too early will show an inflated value and can mislead the diagnosis. That’s why patience matters here as much as the meter itself. In practice a technician often leaves the car locked for several dozen minutes and only then reads the stabilised quiescent current.
If the battery dies after a few days’ standing, it isn’t always the battery’s fault — sometimes something in the car “isn’t asleep”.
Check the alternator and charging state too
A battery going flat while parked is most often parasitic drain, but sometimes the problem lies somewhere else entirely — in the charging system. If the alternator isn’t topping up the battery while driving, the battery sets off on the next standstill undercharged and “dies” sooner. The symptom is similar but the cause different, which is why sound diagnostics also check the charging voltage.
In practice, diagnosing “my power disappears” comes down to three questions: is the battery healthy, is the alternator charging it properly, and is there excessive drain after locking the car? The answer to these three questions almost always points to the culprit, instead of shooting in the dark by replacing part after part, which is costly and frustrating and rarely hits the mark.
First rule out a worn battery
Before you go hunting for a drain, it’s worth checking the battery itself — because the symptoms can be identical to wear. Only a healthy battery that still goes flat points to parasitic drain.
This order matters in practice. Diagnosing parasitic drain can be time-consuming, so there’s no point spending hours on it if the culprit turns out to be simply an old battery on its last legs. A quick voltage measurement and a possible load test take a moment yet can save the whole, unnecessary “detective” work. It’s a principle experienced technicians follow: first rule out the simplest and most common things, and only then look for the more complex ones.
How to prevent discharge while parked
Even after removing the cause, it’s worth cultivating a few habits that protect the battery when the car is used less. This is especially important for cars that stand for several days, and in winter, when the cold further reduces battery performance and shrinks the safety margin.
- Regularly check the battery voltage, especially in autumn
- For longer standstills use a maintenance charger
- Avoid fitting electronics “permanently live”, bypassing the switched circuit
- Make sure the boot and interior lights go out after locking
- Don’t leave chargers and accessories in permanently powered sockets
- After a longer standstill, take a longer drive to fully recharge the battery
These simple steps won’t replace fixing a serious drain, but they genuinely reduce the risk of the car surprising you one morning. Combined with a periodic battery check they give considerable peace of mind, especially with a car used irregularly or left in a garage for a holiday.

Can parasitic drain damage the battery?

Can I measure parasitic drain myself?

In newer cars, where disconnecting the terminal resets settings, it’s more troublesome and it’s worth using a professional’s help, who has the right equipment and knows how not to lose the control units’ memory in the process.
What to do when the car stands longer and I don’t want to drain it?
For a longer standstill the simplest thing is to connect the battery to a maintenance charger, a so-called conditioner, which keeps the battery fully charged. An alternative is disconnecting one terminal, but in modern cars this means losing some settings. It’s a stopgap — it doesn’t replace removing the real cause of the drain.
