In this article we explain how the battery–alternator duo works together, what symptoms reveal which one is failing, how to settle it in a few minutes with a simple voltage measurement, and why the light with a battery symbol isn’t about the battery at all. It’s knowledge that protects against the most common mistake: replacing the battery when the alternator is to blame, and vice versa.
How the battery and alternator work together
These two parts form a system that divides the roles. The battery stores energy and delivers it when the engine isn’t running — above all during starting, but also to keep the control units’ memory alive while parked. The alternator, in turn, is a generator driven by a belt from the engine: when the car is moving it produces current that powers all the electronics and at the same time recharges the battery, replenishing the energy used on starting.
In practice this means a healthy battery without a healthy alternator will quickly go flat, because no one is topping it up. And the other way round: a healthy alternator won’t help if a worn battery can’t deliver the starting current in frost. That’s why the symptoms of both faults can be similar, and the key is being able to tell them apart, instead of shooting in the dark by replacing parts. The good news is that in most cases a moment’s observation and a simple measurement are enough to point accurately to the culprit.

The symptoms of a worn battery have a common denominator: they appear at starting and worsen in the cold, but once the car is moving everything works normally. That’s because after starting the alternator takes over running the system, and the weak battery stops mattering. So if the problem only affects the moment of starting, the trail almost always leads to the battery.

The alternator’s symptoms are the opposite: they appear or worsen while driving, not at starting. Characteristic are lights dimming under heavier load, for example after switching on the blower or window heating, and the battery light coming on while driving. The most telling signal is a situation where even a freshly replaced battery is flat again after a few days — a sign that nothing is charging it properly. There can also be an audible symptom: a whine or wail from under the bonnet with worn alternator bearings.
A simple measurement test
Measure the voltage at the terminals: at rest a healthy battery shows about 12.6 V, and after starting the engine the voltage should rise to 13.8–14.4 V. No such rise points to the alternator, not the battery.
This simple measurement with an ordinary multimeter settles most cases. A healthy system behaves predictably: resting voltage around 12.6 V, a jump to the 13.8–14.4 V range after starting, and with consumers on (lights, blower, window heating) the voltage shouldn’t drop below about 13.5 V. If after starting the voltage doesn’t rise at all or even falls, the problem almost certainly lies in the alternator. If, on the other hand, it rises correctly yet the car barely starts, the trail leads to a worn battery.
- Switch off the ignition and measure the resting voltage at the terminals
- Start the engine and read the voltage again — it should rise
- Switch on consumers and check the voltage stays above ~13.5 V
- No rise or a drop in voltage → suspect the alternator
- A correct rise but a weak start → suspect the battery
Rule of thumb: if the voltage doesn’t rise after starting, the alternator is to blame. If it rises but the car still starts poorly — the battery.
The battery light isn’t about the battery
Despite the name, the light with the battery symbol signals a charging problem, so most often the alternator. We cover its meaning and other alternator symptoms separately.
It’s one of the most common misunderstandings. The red battery symbol on the dashboard doesn’t mean “replace the battery” but “the charging system isn’t working properly”. When it comes on while driving, it’s a sign the alternator has stopped charging and the car is already running “on the reserve” stored in the battery. In such a situation there’s usually a few dozen minutes of driving left before the battery runs out and the engine stalls.
What else can pose as a worn battery
It isn’t always the battery or the alternator that’s to blame. Symptoms resembling their failure can also come from other parts easy to forget during diagnosis, and which are often much cheaper to fix.
- Corroded or loose terminals — they increase resistance and hinder starting
- Excessive parasitic drain — it discharges the battery while parked
- A worn accessory belt or tensioner — the alternator is driven worse
- A faulty starter motor — a weak start despite a good battery
That’s why sound diagnostics don’t end at a single measurement. It’s worth checking the terminals’ condition, the charging voltage and any parasitic drain before deciding to replace anything. This methodical approach lets you hit the real cause the first time and avoid a costly replacement of a part that wasn’t faulty at all. Especially tempting, and misleading, is replacing battery after battery when the real problem lies in the charging or a current drain.
A quick cheat sheet — how to spot the culprit
If you want to remember just one thing, let it be the question of when the problem appears. The answer almost always points to the right trail, even before you reach for a meter.
- A problem only at starting, gone once running → the battery
- A problem while driving, the electrics dim → the alternator
- The battery light comes on while driving → the alternator
- A new battery flat again after a few days → the alternator or parasitic drain
- A heavy start only in frost, fine in summer → the battery
This simple rule won’t replace a measurement, but in most cases it immediately directs attention to the right part. The voltage measurement only confirms a conclusion you can often reach just by observing how the car behaves. It’s a big saving of time and money, because it lets you focus the diagnosis on the right part straight away.

The car starts after a jump but stalls when the leads come off. What is it?
That’s a classic symptom of a faulty alternator. If after a jump-start and disconnecting the help the engine stalls or the electrics weaken, it means the alternator isn’t sustaining the system’s operation and the car is running only on the last of the battery’s energy. With a weak battery but a healthy alternator, the car drives normally after starting and doesn’t stall when the leads come off.
Is it safe to drive with the battery light on?
A short drive to the service usually yes, but don’t drag it out. With charging not working, the car uses the energy stored in the battery, and when that runs out the engine stalls — often in the least convenient place. It’s worth limiting power use (turn off the air conditioning, radio, unnecessary lights, window and seat heating) and diagnosing the alternator as soon as possible. The fewer consumers running, the longer the car will go on the battery reserve.
Can a weak battery damage the alternator?
Indirectly yes. A heavily discharged battery forces the alternator into constant, intense work trying to recharge it, which over longer use loads it beyond the norm. So a neglected, worn battery is not only its own problem but also speeds up the wear of a hitherto healthy alternator.
Can I tell the alternator from the battery myself, without a workshop?
Yes, an ordinary multimeter and a moment are enough. Measure the voltage at the terminals before and after starting the engine. If after starting it rises to about 13.8–14.4 V, the alternator is charging — then suspect the battery. If it doesn’t rise, the problem is on the charging side. It’s a safe measurement, because 12–14 V poses no danger.
I jump-started the car — will driving charge the battery fully?
Partly, but rarely fully. A short drive after a jump-start only pre-charges the battery, especially if it was deeply discharged. To top it up properly you need a longer trip or, best of all, charging with a charger at home. If the battery still goes flat despite this, go back to diagnosing the alternator and parasitic drain, because it’s a sign that charging from driving alone doesn’t solve the problem.
The light went out on its own — has the problem gone?
Not necessarily. The charging light can go out and come on depending on revs and load, especially with a strained alternator or a loose belt. The symptom disappearing for a moment doesn’t mean the fault has cleared, only that conditions temporarily improved. If the light appeared even once while driving, it’s worth checking the charging system before the problem returns at a worse moment.
How long does an alternator last?
The alternator is a durable part and often works faultlessly for many years and hundreds of thousands of kilometres. What wears above all are its brushes, bearings and voltage regulator, and sometimes replacing just the regulator restores function without replacing the whole alternator. Its weakening symptoms usually build up gradually, so a regular check of the charging voltage — for example during an oil change or a battery check — lets you catch the problem before it immobilises the car.
