What oil for a Fiat 1.3 Multijet?
5 min readOil for a Fiat 1.3 Multijet has to be chosen carefully. This popular small diesel was fitted not only in Fiats but also Opel, Suzuki and Lancia cars. Like any small turbo diesel unit, it’s sensitive to oil quality and cleanliness.
The Fiat 9.55535 standard and ACEA class
For the 1.3 Multijet the Fiat in-house standard from the 9.55535 family is crucial. In versions with a particulate filter this means Low SAPS oil of ACEA C2 class, most often in 5W30 viscosity. It’s the approval, not viscosity alone, that determines the right choice.
- Fiat standard from the 9.55535 family (e.g. -S1, -S3) — confirm in the manual
- Cars with a DPF — Low SAPS oil of ACEA C2 class
- Viscosity most often 5W30
- Best selected by VIN or engine code
Why oil cleanliness matters so much here
The small sump capacity and the turbocharger mean the oil works intensively and wears out quickly. Neglected oil shows up fastest on the turbo, so a timely change is essential.
In the 1.3 Multijet the right Fiat standard and Low SAPS oil are the cheapest insurance for the DPF and turbocharger.
Interval and filters
A sensible interval is 10,000–15,000 km, and in the city closer to the lower limit. It’s worth changing the oil together with the filters — especially the fuel filter matters here for the durability of the injection.
We’ll select an oil with the right Fiat standard for your 1.3 Multijet and change it with call-out together with the filter.
