Quality class and viscosity — the basis of the choice
In most Hyundai/Kia petrol engines an oil meeting the current API class (e.g. SN, SP) or ILSAC is required, in a viscosity most often of 5W30, and in newer, economical units 5W20. Always confirm the exact value in the manual or by VIN.

GDI and T-GDI engines — what to watch for
Modern units with direct injection (GDI) and turbocharging (T-GDI) are more demanding. They work at higher temperatures and are sensitive to deposits and to LSPI (low-speed pre-ignition). That’s why an oil of a recent API class with the right additive package matters — an older “any 5W30” oil may not be enough.
LSPI — why old oil can tear a new engine apart
The abbreviation LSPI sounds harmless, but it describes one of the most destructive phenomena in modern turbocharged engines. It means the mixture self-ignites at low engine speed under heavy load — that is, exactly when you pull away from the lights and press hard on the throttle in second gear.
The mixture ignites by itself, before the spark plug has fired. The resulting pressure spike is on a scale the piston was never designed for. This is not ordinary knock, which the ECU can damp by retarding the ignition — a single LSPI event can crack a ring or break a piece out of the piston crown. The engine gives no warning; it simply stops running smoothly.
And this is where the oil comes in. It turned out that the ignition is provoked by droplets of oil reaching the combustion chamber — specifically by the calcium they contain, a common detergent ingredient. That is why the API SP and ILSAC GF-6 standards were created: oils with these classes have a rebuilt additive package in which some of the calcium has been replaced with magnesium, precisely so as not to trigger LSPI. This is the one case where a newer API class is not cosmetic, but real protection against destroying the engine.
The practical conclusion is simple: if you have a T-GDI engine, do not buy oil on viscosity alone. A “5W30, good brand” oil carrying the old API SN class does not protect against LSPI. Look for API SP or ILSAC GF-6 on the label.
Theta II — the engine you need to know about before buying
If you are looking at a used Hyundai or Kia with a 2.0 or 2.4 GDI petrol engine (the Theta II family), check its history exceptionally carefully. It is the unit that caused the group the most trouble in its history and led to multi-million-vehicle service campaigns.
The original cause was machining debris left in the oil galleries of the crankshaft. Metal particles restricted the oil supply to the big-end bearings, the bearings seized, and a connecting rod could punch through the block. The manufacturer responded by extending the warranty and introducing the KSDS system, which listens for the characteristic knock and warns the driver early, dropping the car into reduced-power mode.
For the owner there is one very concrete conclusion: in this engine the oil is the only thing standing between the bearing and disaster, and the margin for error is smaller than elsewhere. An overrun interval, a low level or cheap oil is not a saving in a Theta II — it is a lottery. If you notice a metallic knock rising with engine speed, a dropping oil level with no leaks, or the engine light coming on after a bout of knocking, do not keep driving.
GDI and carbon on the valves — the price of direct injection
In a classic port-injection engine the petrol is sprayed into the intake port and washes over the intake valves on the way, cleaning deposits off them. In a GDI the fuel goes straight into the cylinder, so the valves have nothing to wash them. Oil vapour returning from the breather and exhaust gas from the EGR valve settle on them — and harden into coke.
After a few tens of thousands of kilometres the result can be rough running from cold, snatching at small throttle openings and a loss of power. It cannot be eliminated entirely, but it can be slowed down: the better and fresher the oil, the less it evaporates and the fewer deposits reach the intake. That is a real, measurable reason not to stretch the interval in a GDI.
With a Hyundai and Kia it’s not the oil brand but the current API class and the right viscosity that determine the correct choice.
Interval and level checks
A sensible interval is 10,000–15,000 km, and with city driving and in T-GDI engines closer to the lower limit. Some GDI units can consume oil, so it’s worth checking the level regularly.
A documented change with the right oil is also important for keeping the warranty on Korean cars, known for their long warranty periods.
It is worth knowing that Hyundai and Kia manuals quote two intervals: a normal one and one for “severe operating conditions”. The latter can be half as long, and it is the one that applies to most Polish drivers — though almost nobody checks.
- Frequent short journeys of a few kilometres — these are severe conditions
- Long periods at idle and sitting in traffic — severe conditions
- Driving in sub-zero temperatures for much of the year — severe conditions
- Towing a trailer, driving on unmade roads, frequent hill climbs — severe conditions
- A car on LPG — shorten the interval regardless of what the manufacturer says
If you recognise your own driving in that list, take the shorter interval as your default. The manufacturer is not hiding this information — it simply sits a few pages further on in the manual than the figure everybody remembers.
And if you have a CRDi diesel?
In the 1.6 and 2.0 CRDi diesels the rules change. API and ILSAC classes take a back seat, because what matters above all is the particulate filter. You need a Low SAPS oil — that is, with reduced sulphur, ash and phosphorus content — usually to ACEA C2 or C3, in 5W30 viscosity.
The reason is the same as with other manufacturers: ordinary oil leaves ash behind when burnt, and no regeneration can burn ash out of the filter. It accumulates irreversibly, and after a time the DPF has to be replaced or chemically cleaned. Putting a cheap “diesel oil” into a CRDi without checking the ACEA class is the simplest way to halve the filter’s life.
How much oil it takes
- 1.0 and 1.2 (i10, i20, Picanto, Rio) — usually 3.3–3.6 litres with the filter
- 1.6 GDI and 1.6 T-GDI (i30, Ceed, Sportage, Tucson) — usually 4.0–4.5 litres
- 2.0 and 2.4 GDI (Theta II) — usually 4.8–5.7 litres
- 1.6 CRDi — usually 5.3–5.8 litres
- The oil filter is always changed together with the oil
How to read the label and not get it wrong
The biggest trap when buying oil for a Korean car is that everything looks similar. Bottles of 5W30 stand side by side at prices differing by a factor of two, and the difference sits in the place nobody looks: the small print with the quality classes.
- Viscosity first — it must be exactly the one from the manual, most often 5W30 or 5W20
- Then the API class — in a turbocharged direct-injection engine look for SP, in an older one at least SN
- Alternatively ILSAC GF-6 (newer) or GF-5 — marked by the round starburst symbol on the label
- In a CRDi diesel you check ACEA C2 or C3 instead of API — that is the sign the oil is Low SAPS
- The brand on the bottle is the last and least important criterion
If the label carries none of these classes, only marketing slogans like “premium protection” or “for modern engines”, put the bottle back. The absence of a specific standard usually means the oil maker did not pass the qualifying tests — not that they forgot to mention them.
Frequently asked questions about oil for a Hyundai and Kia
Can I use 5W30 instead of 5W20?
Only if the manual permits both viscosities for your engine — and in some models it genuinely does, listing 5W20 for lower fuel consumption and 5W30 for harder use. If the manufacturer specifies 5W20 only, do not change it on your own initiative: thicker oil reaches the timing gear and the chain tensioner more slowly on a cold start.
Do I have to use a main dealer to keep the warranty?
No. EU rules allow a car to be serviced outside the manufacturer’s network without losing the warranty, provided the oil used meets the required specification and the change is documented. Keep the invoice showing the oil’s name and class and the mileage — that is the proof, not a stamp.
My GDI engine consumes oil. Is that normal?
Modest consumption falls within the manufacturer’s limits, but rising consumption in a Theta II should be taken seriously rather than dismissed with a top-up. It may be the first sign of a bearing problem. Check the level every 2–3 fill-ups, and if consumption is growing month by month, go for diagnosis before you hear knocking.
