Low SAPS oil is one of those terms that appears more and more often in the service books of modern cars, yet still causes a great deal of confusion. Put simply, it is an engine oil with a reduced content of sulphated ash, phosphorus and sulphur. Its main job is not actually to lubricate the engine better, but to protect the exhaust after-treatment system, and above all the particulate filter. In cars fitted with such a filter, using the wrong oil can, over the course of a few tens of thousands of kilometres, lead to the filter becoming irreversibly clogged and to a costly replacement. What does the acronym SAPS actually mean?

SAPS stands for Sulphated Ash, Phosphorus and Sulphur. It does not refer to contaminants, but to the elements and compounds that make up the oil's additive package. Sulphated ash comes mainly from detergents and anti-wear additives that keep the engine clean and protect the components working inside it. Phosphorus and sulphur come primarily from anti-wear additives of the ZDDP type, which for decades have protected the valvetrain and other heavily loaded surfaces. In themselves, then, they are useful — the problem only begins when they reach the sensitive exhaust filter.

One property of ash is crucial here: it simply does not burn. Whereas the soot collected in the particulate filter can be burned off during a regeneration cycle, sulphated ash stays inside permanently. With each subsequent operating cycle of the engine, its layer builds up, gradually reducing the cross-section of the filter channels. The more ash the oil contains, the faster this process advances. That is exactly why manufacturers limit the SAPS content in oils intended for cars with a filter — not so that the oil lubricates worse, but to extend the life of the expensive exhaust component.

Why limit the ash in the oil at all?

The answer lies in the design of the modern exhaust after-treatment system. Diesels have a diesel particulate filter, the DPF (FAP in French nomenclature), and more and more direct-injection petrol engines have its petrol equivalent, the GPF. All of these components work on a similar principle: they trap fine particulate matter from the exhaust gases and then periodically burn it off. A small amount of engine oil always makes its way into the combustion chamber and travels with the exhaust gases to the filter. If it is an oil with a high ash content, every such passage leaves an unremovable deposit in the filter.

Low SAPS, Mid SAPS and Full SAPS — three levels

It is worth knowing that oils are divided not into two but into three ash-content categories. This distinction has a direct bearing on which oil you are allowed to use in a given car. Full SAPS means an oil with a classic, high additive content — excellent for older engines without a filter, but dangerous for a DPF. Mid SAPS, meaning a medium ash content, is an intermediate solution often required by certain manufacturers. Low SAPS has the lowest ash content and is intended for cars in which protecting the filter has the highest priority.

In practice, the goal is not always to choose the oil with the lowest possible ash content, but to match the manufacturer's requirement exactly. That is why the oil is not chosen by guesswork but according to the specific specification written in the vehicle's documentation.

The link with ACEA class C standards

The SAPS content is not stated directly in litres or percentages on the label — it hides behind the quality standard markings. The most important point of reference here is the European ACEA classification, in which low-ash oils are marked with the letter C. It is the classes from the ACEA C family that define the permissible levels of ash, phosphorus and sulphur for cars with a particulate filter. If your car's manufacturer requires an oil that meets an ACEA C standard, that means you must reach for a Low or Mid SAPS oil.

The ACEA standard alone, however, is only half the story. Car makers have their own, often stricter requirements, described in what are known as manufacturer approvals — such as VW 504.00/507.00, BMW LL-04 or MB 229.51. An approval guarantees that a given oil has been tested and cleared specifically for a particular engine family. In a car with a particulate filter, it is the manufacturer approvals that are the final word, while the ACEA standard is only a starting point.

Which cars require Low SAPS oil?

The simplest rule is this: if a car has a factory-fitted particulate filter, it almost certainly requires an oil with a reduced ash content. This applies to the vast majority of diesels built after 2009, when the DPF became effectively a standard forced by emission regulations. It increasingly applies to petrol engines too — especially direct-injection units, which for several years have been fitted with a GPF. It is not worth relying on intuition here, because the presence of a filter is not always obvious from the outside.

  • Modern direct-injection petrol engines with a GPF filter
  • Cars for which the manufacturer requires an ACEA class C standard

Certainty about the required specification comes only from the owner's manual or the manufacturer's database. It is worth remembering that the same car model, depending on the year and engine version, may require different oils. What happens if you pour in the wrong oil?

Pouring an ordinary full-ash oil into a car with a particulate filter does not show up straight away. The engine will start normally, run flawlessly, and for a while nothing will draw your attention. The damage, however, accumulates quietly — ash from every operating cycle settles in the filter faster than the manufacturer anticipated. After a few tens of thousands of kilometres the first symptoms appear: more frequent regenerations, a drop in power, an illuminated DPF warning light and, in the worst case, the engine going into limp mode.

The worst part is that settled ash can no longer be removed by an ordinary regeneration. A filter clogged with ash must either undergo costly chemical cleaning or be replaced with a new one. It is an expense that is easy to avoid by choosing the right oil from the start. Especially in a diesel, where the filter regenerations already put a heavy load on the oil, saving money on the wrong product usually ends with a much bigger bill. How to choose the right Low SAPS oil for your car?

Choosing a Low SAPS oil does not have to be complicated if you approach it methodically. Instead of being guided by price, brand or the product that happens to be popular in the workshop, it is worth sticking to a few simple steps that lead straight to the right specification. The order below works in practice regardless of whether you have a diesel or a modern petrol engine with a filter.

  1. Check the required ACEA standard and manufacturer approval in the owner's manual
  2. Establish the correct viscosity, for example 5W30 or 0W20, in line with the documentation
  3. Choose an oil that meets both the standard and the specific approval at the same time
  4. Make sure the marking on the packaging matches your car's requirements
  5. At every change, always pair the new oil with a fresh oil filter

Frequently asked questions about Low SAPS oil

Does Low SAPS oil lubricate the engine worse?

No. This is a common myth stemming from the belief that fewer additives mean weaker protection. In reality, Low SAPS oils are created with modern engines in mind and give them full protection against wear. The reduced ash content is compensated for by other, more advanced components of the additive package. In a car designed around such an oil it performs optimally, and there is no reason to fear worse lubrication.

Can I put Low SAPS oil into an older car without a filter?

Technically usually yes, although it does not always make sense. Low SAPS oil will not harm an engine without a particulate filter, but it also gives it no extra benefit and is sometimes more expensive. In an older design that requires a full-ash oil with a high content of anti-wear additives, it is better to stick to the specification the manufacturer intended rather than forcing a low-ash oil onto it.

Are Low SAPS and Mid SAPS the same thing?

No, these are two different levels of ash content. Low SAPS means the lowest content, while Mid SAPS means a medium one. Some manufacturers specifically require a medium-ash oil, and pouring in a product from the lower category in such a case can be a mistake. That is why it is not enough to look generally for a low-ash oil — you have to match the specific standard and approval written for the given engine.

How can I tell that an oil is Low SAPS?

You will not find the information as the phrase Low SAPS on the front of the packaging, but in the standard markings. Look for an ACEA class with the letter C — for example C2, C3 or C4 — and manufacturer approvals intended for cars with a filter. It is precisely these symbols that confirm a reduced ash content. If an oil only carries A/B classes, it is a full-ash product and is not suitable for a car with a DPF.

Will a single mistake destroy the filter straight away?

Usually not. A single use of the wrong oil for one interval is unlikely to clog the filter immediately, though it will slightly speed up the accumulation of ash. The problem becomes serious when the wrong oil is used regularly, change after change. If you suspect that unsuitable oil has ended up in the engine, it is best to change it at the next opportunity for a product that matches the approval and return to the correct specification.
