The ACEA standard is one of those markings a driver sees on every bottle of engine oil, yet rarely knows exactly what it means. And yet it is precisely this standard, alongside viscosity and manufacturer approvals, that determines whether a given oil truly suits your engine. In this article we explain step by step how to read the ACEA classes, how the A/B, C and E groups differ, why a standard is not the same thing as viscosity or an approval, and why all of this knowledge matters to an ordinary driver. Once you have read it, the label on the bottle will stop being a set of mysterious symbols and become a clear set of instructions instead.

What exactly is the ACEA standard?

ACEA stands for Association des Constructeurs Européens d'Automobiles, the European Automobile Manufacturers' Association. This organisation developed a shared set of requirements describing the quality and intended use of engine oils sold across Europe. The ACEA standard does not tell you directly how thick an oil is, but rather which laboratory and engine tests it had to pass in order to earn a given class. Among other things it checks oxidation resistance, protection against wear, engine cleanliness, the tendency to foam, and the impact on exhaust after-treatment components. As a result, the ACEA class is a shorthand description of the type of engine and operating conditions an oil was designed for.

An ACEA marking always consists of a letter and a number, for example A3/B4, C2 or C3. The letter defines the main group of applications, while the number specifies the level of requirements within it. On top of that comes the year the specification was issued, because ACEA updates its sequences every few years, adapting them to new engine designs and ever-stricter emission standards. It is worth remembering that a higher number does not always mean simply a better oil — it means an oil with a different profile, matched to a different group of engines. That is why the key is not to pick the highest number, but the class specified by the maker of your car.

The A/B classes — petrol and passenger-car diesel

The classes marked with the letters A and B are the oldest and most classic family of ACEA designations. The letter A refers to petrol engines, while the letter B refers to diesel engines in passenger cars and light vans. In practice you usually see them together, in a combined form such as A3/B4, because a single oil is designed to meet the requirements of both types of engine. These are oils with a full additive content, including sulphated ash, which protect the engine superbly but are not suited to working with modern particulate filters.

  • A1/B1 — low-friction oils, today practically withdrawn
  • A3/B3 — high-stability oils for demanding engines
  • A3/B4 — the most common class for petrol and direct-injection diesel
  • A5/B5 — fuel-economy oils with a low HTHS viscosity

The A/B classes work well in older and moderately modern cars without a particulate filter, where strong protection and high resistance to load matter most. You do have to be careful, though: pouring an A3/B4 oil into a car that factory-requires a class C oil can, over time, damage the exhaust after-treatment system. This is exactly why matching the viscosity alone, such as the popular 5W30 marking, is not enough — two oils of the same viscosity can belong to completely different ACEA classes.

The C classes — Low SAPS and DPF compatibility

The classes marked with the letter C are the industry's answer to the spread of particulate filters and catalytic converters. These are oils from the Low SAPS and Mid SAPS family, meaning a reduced content of sulphated ash, phosphorus and sulphur. In classic A/B oils these components play a useful role, but in excess they build up in the DPF and gradually clog it, and they also shorten the life of the catalytic converter. Class C oils are designed to protect the engine just as effectively while being friendly to the exhaust after-treatment system.

Within the C group you will find several classes that differ in their permitted ash content and their HTHS viscosity. C1 is an oil with a very low ash content, C2 is a fuel-economy oil with low friction, C3 is the most popular class with a slightly higher viscosity and strong protection, while C4 is a variant with a particularly low sulphur and phosphorus content. If your car has a particulate filter, you should stick exactly to the class C that the manufacturer specified, because a mistake within this group can genuinely shorten the filter's life.

The E classes — heavy-duty engines

The letter E denotes oils intended for diesel engines in trucks, buses and other commercial vehicles. This is a completely different world from passenger-car oils: heavy-duty units work under enormous load for hundreds of thousands of kilometres, and drain intervals can be very long. Class E oils, such as E4, E6, E7 or E9, therefore have to maintain their parameters for far longer, cope with large amounts of soot and protect elaborate exhaust after-treatment systems. The average car driver will never come across this group, but it is worth knowing that the letter E is a signal: this oil is not meant for an ordinary passenger car.

Standard, viscosity and approval — three different things

The biggest confusion in drivers' minds comes from mixing up three concepts that describe an oil from completely different angles. Viscosity, for example 5W30, tells you how thick the oil is at low and high temperatures. The ACEA standard, for example C3, tells you about its quality class and intended use. A manufacturer approval, for example VW 504.00/507.00 or MB 229.51, is an official confirmation from a specific brand that a given oil has passed its own tests. These three layers overlap, and only together do they describe the right oil.

  • Viscosity (e.g. 5W30) — how fluid the oil is in cold and heat
  • ACEA standard (e.g. A3/B4, C3) — quality class and engine type
  • Manufacturer approval (e.g. VW, BMW, MB) — a specific brand's clearance
  • Only all three together give certainty of the right choice

Why does a driver need this knowledge?

You might ask why an average driver should bother with ACEA letters and numbers when they are not a mechanic. The answer is simple: it is precisely this knowledge that protects against costly mistakes. Whether you buy oil yourself or have the change done for you, it pays to be able to check whether the product offered meets the class required in the service book. The wrong ACEA class means not only weaker engine protection, but in modern diesels a real risk of clogging the particulate filter, whose repair can cost more than a dozen oil changes put together.

In practice the whole procedure comes down to a few steps. First you check in the owner's manual or service book which ACEA class and which approval your engine requires. Then you look for an oil whose label meets exactly those requirements at the correct viscosity. If the car has a particulate filter, it will almost always be one of the C classes. If there is no such filter and the engine is older, an appropriate A/B class is usually enough. Thanks to this approach you avoid both overpaying and the dangerous habit of saving money on an oil of the wrong specification.

Does a higher number in an ACEA class mean a better oil?

Not in the simple sense. A higher number means a different requirement profile, not automatically a better product. For example, an A3/B4 oil has a higher HTHS viscosity than A5/B5, which makes it better for some engines but not for all of them. Similarly, C3 is not simply better than C2 — these are oils with different purposes. The best oil is always the one that meets the class specified by the maker of your car, not the one with the highest figure on the label.

Can I put a class C oil in an old car without a DPF?

Usually yes, though it does not always make sense. Class C oils have a reduced ash content, which in itself does not harm an older engine without a particulate filter. The catch is that some C classes have a lower HTHS viscosity than an older design needs, so such an oil may protect less well than a classic A3/B4. It is always safest to stick to the class recommended by the manufacturer, rather than pouring in an oil of a different specification simply because it happened to be at hand.

Where do I find the required ACEA class for my car?

The most reliable source is the car's owner's manual and the service book, where the manufacturer states the required ACEA class, the viscosity and, most often, its own approval as well. It is not worth looking for this information by the oil brand or by price alone, because it is the specification, not the reputation of the oil maker, that decides compatibility. If in doubt, you can always ask the person carrying out the change to select the oil — a good workshop will verify the requirements from the VIN number or the engine data.

Does the ACEA standard replace the manufacturer approval?

No, they are two complementary layers. The ACEA class is a pan-European quality standard, while an approval is an additional, far more detailed requirement from a specific brand that the oil must meet in its own tests. In many cars, especially German ones, it is precisely the approval that is binding and can be a condition of keeping the warranty. The ACEA class is then the starting point, but the last word belongs to the approval named in the vehicle's documentation.
