The terminals are where the battery meets the car’s wiring. Corroded or loose ones can make starting hard even with a healthy battery. It’s one of the simplest and cheapest things worth looking after, and neglecting it is sometimes confused with wear of the battery itself.

Where the deposit on the terminals comes from

A white, bluish or greenish deposit is the effect of corrosion, sped up by fumes from the battery and moisture. A layer of deposit increases the resistance of the connection, which worsens current flow — especially at the high draw during starting.

The mechanism is simple: the terminals and poles are metal parts exposed to moisture, temperature swings and electrolyte fumes escaping from the battery during charging. In these conditions the metal oxidises, forming a layer of oxides and sulfates with high resistance. This thin layer acts like a resistor wired in series into the starting circuit — and with a starter current of hundreds of amps, even a small resistance makes a difference.

The deposit appears more often at the positive terminal, but it happens at both poles. It’s encouraged by: a leaking or overcharged battery, a damp environment and loose mounting, which additionally causes micro-arcing. That’s why it’s worth combining terminal cleaning with a check of their tightness and the battery’s general condition, treating these three things as one coherent inspection of the starting system.

How to clean and protect the terminals

Why bad terminals pose as a worn battery

It’s one of the most common scenarios in which a good battery is needlessly replaced. A corroded or loose terminal increases the resistance of the connection, so less current than it should reaches the starter. The car starts with difficulty, “grinds”, and the driver reflexively blames the battery, even though it’s perfectly healthy.

The symptom worsens in frost, when starting already needs more energy, and under heavy draw, for example with the lights and blower on. So before we declare the battery worn, it’s worth first looking at and cleaning the terminals. It’s the cheapest possible “repair”, and very often enough. Only if the problem returns after cleaning does the trail lead to the battery itself or the charging system. This is worth remembering especially with older and less-used cars, where terminal corrosion has more time to develop.

Dedicated battery-terminal greases, often dyed red or blue, and technical petroleum jelly work best. Random universal greases or ordinary oil are discouraged, because they run off quickly or don’t protect against electrolyte fumes. A well-chosen product keeps the contact clean all season, including in winter, when a reliable start matters most. There are also practical felt washers soaked in an anti-corrosion agent, fitted on the pole under the terminal, which additionally slow the formation of deposit.

In modern cars, especially with a start-stop system and elaborate electronics, the quality of the terminal connection matters even more. A large, variable current draw and frequent charge cycles mean even a small contact resistance makes itself felt sooner — with voltage drops, electronic errors or a capricious start-stop.

That’s why in such cars clean, firmly tightened terminals are not just a matter of starting but also of the whole system’s stable operation. A neglected contact can generate hard-to-diagnose, “floating” electrical faults that disappear after a simple cleaning and protection of the poles. So before anyone starts replacing expensive modules, it’s worth ruling out this simplest and cheapest cause.

How often to check the terminals

A good practice is a glance at the terminals during other work under the bonnet — topping up washer fluid or checking the oil level. It’s especially worth doing before the winter season, because frost mercilessly exposes every weak connection in the starting system. A few seconds of inspection can forestall a morning surprise in the car park.

If you notice a growing deposit despite regular cleaning, it can be a sign that the battery is leaking or being overcharged by a faulty charging system. In that case cleaning the terminals alone won’t be enough — it’s worth checking the charging voltage and the battery’s condition to remove the cause, not just the effect.

When connecting, the order is reversed: positive first, negative last — for the same reason. This simple rule protects against arcing and damaging the wiring.

Will disconnecting the terminals reset the car’s settings?

For cleaning alone there’s usually no need to fully disconnect the battery — access to the poles is enough. If the terminals do have to come off, though, in newer cars the clock, radio or minor adaptations may reset.
