In this article we explain why start-stop cars require AGM or EFB batteries, how these two types differ, what happens if you fit an ordinary battery, and why after a change the new battery often has to be registered in the on-board computer.
How start-stop loads the battery
In a classic car the battery starts the engine once, and for the rest of the drive it is calmly topped up by the alternator. Its work comes down to a few starts a day. In a start-stop car the situation looks completely different: during a single city trip the engine can shut down and restart dozens of times.
On top of that comes a second element: with the engine off it’s the battery that powers all the electronics — air conditioning, infotainment, lights, control units. So the battery is alternately discharged and recharged, at a rate incomparable with a classic car. Modern systems add regeneration on top, that is recovering energy from braking, which charges the battery with short, intense pulses. This mode of operation requires a battery designed specifically for it.
Why not an ordinary battery
In a start-stop car the battery works almost non-stop: it starts the engine every moment and is recharged, including from braking energy recovery. An ordinary flooded battery will wear out quickly in these conditions. That’s why reinforced EFB and AGM types are used.

EFB or AGM — which to choose
The rule is simple and worth remembering: you can replace an EFB with a stronger AGM, but never the other way round. AGM is the most durable design — sealed, with the electrolyte bound in a glass-fibre mat pressed tightly against the plates, resistant to deep discharges and the greatest loads. It goes into cars with extensive start-stop and energy regeneration.
EFB is an intermediate solution — a reinforced flooded battery, more cycle-resistant than an ordinary one, intended for simpler start-stop systems. It’s cheaper than AGM and works very well in a car that provides for it from the factory. The reference point always remains what your car’s manufacturer requires.
How AGM differs from an ordinary battery
In a classic flooded battery the electrolyte is a liquid freely covering the plates. In AGM (Absorbent Glass Mat) the electrolyte is bound in a glass-fibre mat closely adhering to the plates. This seemingly small design difference brings very concrete benefits.

- A higher starting current at the same dimensions
- A sealed, maintenance-free design with no risk of leakage
- The option of mounting in the cabin or boot
That last feature matters in practice: in many modern cars the battery isn’t under the bonnet at all but under a seat, in the boot or under the floor. A classic flooded battery, which can emit gases, isn’t suitable for such mounting — AGM is. It’s another reason why you don’t change the battery type “by eye”.
What happens if you fit an ordinary battery
The temptation to save is considerable, because an ordinary flooded battery costs clearly less than an AGM. It’s a false economy, though, that quickly backfires. A battery not adapted to hundreds of cycles a day loses capacity at a rate the manufacturer never envisaged — it can need replacing after just a few to a dozen or so months.
The second consequence can be even more surprising: the car switches off the start-stop function itself. The energy management system detects that the battery isn’t holding its parameters and stops shutting the engine down, to protect itself from immobilising the car. So the driver gets a car that paid for the system but doesn’t use it — and with a battery on its last legs on top of that.
In extreme cases a third problem appears: deep discharges an ordinary battery can’t cope with lead to plate sulfation and irreversible capacity loss. The battery therefore ends its life far sooner than its age would suggest, and the car starts worse and worse on colder mornings.
Registering and adapting the new battery
In many start-stop cars the new battery has to be registered in the on-board computer. Without that the charging system treats the new battery as an old one, which shortens its life and can switch off the start-stop function.
Registration (coding) means telling the energy management system that a fresh cell of a given type and capacity has appeared in the car. Thanks to this the charging algorithm picks parameters for the new battery rather than a worn one. It’s done with a diagnostic tester, and in some cars with a simpler procedure — in both cases it’s a matter of a few minutes on the spot.
In a start-stop car the battery isn’t just a “starter” — it’s part of a system that often needs registering after a change.
Is it worth switching off start-stop to save the battery
This question comes up with many drivers. Yes, switching start-stop off with the button every time you start the car does relieve the battery, but in practice the gain is small if the battery is correctly chosen. An AGM or EFB battery was designed for exactly these conditions and simply handles them.
It makes more sense, then, to take care of the right battery type and its condition than to give up a function you paid for when buying the car. The exception is when the car drives only very short trips — then the battery works undercharged anyway, and start-stop doesn’t help it. But that’s an argument for longer trips and regular battery checks rather than for permanently switching the system off at every start.
How to tell the battery in a start-stop car is weakening
Start-stop cars have the advantage of signalling a deteriorating battery themselves — and before starting problems appear. It’s worth knowing these signs, because they let you react in advance.
- Start-stop works less and less often or has stopped shutting the engine down
- The function switches off after a short drive, though it worked before
- A message about saving energy or limiting comfort functions
- A lazier start, especially in the morning and in cooler weather
- The car more often needs a longer trip to “come back to itself”
- Dimming lights and slower window regulator operation
The first point is the most characteristic here. If start-stop suddenly stopped working and the car shows nothing on the dashboard, the first thing worth checking is the battery — it’s a far more common cause than a fault in the system itself. A voltage measurement and a load test usually settle the matter in a few minutes.
Frequently asked questions about the start-stop battery
Can I fit an AGM instead of an EFB?
Yes, that direction is allowed and safe. AGM is a stronger and more durable design, so it will cope where EFB was provided from the factory. You just have to make sure the other parameters — capacity, starting current, dimensions and polarity — fit the car, and register the new battery, giving the right type so the charging system picks the correct algorithm.
Why did start-stop stop working after a battery change?
It’s most often the result of not registering the new battery or fitting the wrong battery type. The system, seeing parameters that don’t match what it expects, blocks the function for safety. After a correct battery choice and registration in the computer, start-stop usually returns to normal operation after a few driving cycles.
Will an AGM battery last longer than an ordinary one?
AGM is far more cycle-resistant, but it also works in much tougher conditions. In practice, in a start-stop car its life is often similar to or slightly shorter than an ordinary battery in a simpler car. That’s the natural price of the convenience this system gives — and with the right choice and registration an AGM will still serve for many years.
Can an AGM battery be charged with an ordinary charger?
Not with just any. AGM batteries need a charger with the right charging mode, because they’re sensitive to too high a voltage — overcharging can damage them permanently. Modern microprocessor chargers have a dedicated AGM mode and only those are worth using. An old, plain charger without regulation is a risk better avoided.
How much does a battery for a start-stop car cost?
EFB and AGM batteries are more expensive than ordinary flooded ones, and AGM is the priciest of the three types. It’s a cost justified by the design and real durability, though. It’s worth seeing it as an investment: a properly chosen battery will work for several years and let you use start-stop, while saving on an ordinary battery ends with another replacement after a few months.
Can I fit the battery myself in a start-stop car?
Technically it can be done, but without registering the new battery in the computer the effect will be half-hearted — the system will keep charging it like a worn one, and start-stop may not work. On top of that, in many such cars the battery is hard to reach, and cutting power clears the settings. So it’s more convenient to leave it to a service with a tester that does the whole thing in one go.
