Gas burns “cleaner” but at a higher temperature, which loads the valves, valve seats and the oil itself harder. The oil choice should take this into account, and the change interval is worth shortening relative to what the manufacturer specified for petrol alone.
A fair few myths have grown up around oil for LPG cars — from the belief that “gas is clean, so the oil gets dirty more slowly” to the opposite extreme, that a gas system destroys the engine in no time. The truth lies in the middle and comes down to one rule: gas doesn’t forgive skipped servicing as easily as petrol does. In this article we explain which oil to choose, how often to change it, and what else to remember so that running on LPG stays cheap in the longer term too.
Why LPG is tougher on the oil
Burning gas gives higher operating temperatures and less “wet” lubrication of the upper combustion chamber than petrol. The valves and their seats work harder, and the oil loses its properties faster. That’s why its thermal stability matters.

What exactly happens in an engine on gas
To understand why LPG is sometimes called a “tougher” fuel for the oil, it helps to look at what happens in the combustion chamber. Petrol injected into the manifold or cylinder is a liquid that partly wets the walls and slightly cools the upper combustion chamber — the valves and their seats get a touch of “wet” cooling. Gas is burned in a vapour form, so this effect is practically absent.
The result is that the seats and heads of the exhaust valves work at a higher temperature on LPG and are more exposed to so-called valve burning. This phenomenon mainly affects older designs or poorly adjusted systems, but it shows why a thermally stable oil and a healthy engine are so important when running on gas.
On top of that comes a second mechanism: at a higher temperature the oil oxidises faster and loses its properties. The performance additives run out sooner, and the oil itself tends to thicken and form deposits. That’s why the same oil that on petrol would comfortably “see out” a full interval can be tired earlier on gas — even if it looks the same to the eye.
The approval comes first
Fitting LPG doesn’t exempt you from using oil compliant with the engine manufacturer’s approval. The gas system is an add-on — the factory specification of the unit remains the basis.
In practice this means we first check which standard (e.g. ACEA, API) and which viscosity the car manufacturer requires, and only within that scope do we look for an oil with good thermal stability. Some oil makers offer variants described as intended for LPG or CNG cars — a sensible choice, provided they also meet the factory approval. The words “for LPG” on the can alone aren’t enough if the oil lacks the required specification.
Which oil works well on gas
There is no single universal “LPG oil”, but you can point to features that are especially desirable here. Key are high thermal stability — the oil’s resistance to oxidation and breakdown at elevated temperature — and the ability to maintain the oil film despite the hotter operation of the upper engine.
A good-quality synthetic oil of the right viscosity and approval usually meets these requirements. More important than chasing exotic “miracle” products is consistently sticking to the right specification and a shortened interval. This combination genuinely protects the valves and the turbo, if the car has one.
We’d advise against dropping to the cheapest mineral or semi-synthetic oils of a “whatever” brand just because you change them more often. More frequent changing still won’t make up for the poor thermal resistance of a cheap oil, and when running on gas it’s precisely that resistance that matters most. Better to choose a decent oil and keep to the interval than to save on quality.
On LPG the oil works harder — that’s why a shortened interval is an investment in the valves, not an overreaction.
A shorter interval and level checks
When running on gas it’s worth shortening the change interval, usually by a third compared with the petrol recommendation. Also check the oil level regularly — hotter operation encourages its loss, and a shortage of oil when running on gas is especially dangerous for the harder-worked valves.
It’s worth putting that into concrete terms: if the manufacturer plans a change every 15,000 km, with intensive gas driving it’s sensible to shorten it to around 10,000 km. For cars driven little but in tough city conditions, a change once a year regardless of mileage is also a good reference point — oil ages with time, not just with kilometres. This simple rule protects the engine from a situation where for several years it runs on ever more tired oil.
What else to remember in an LPG car
Oil isn’t everything. When running on gas, the condition of the ignition system is especially important — the spark plugs and leads work in harsher conditions, and their wear shows up sooner in how smoothly the engine runs. Many systems also need periodic valve-clearance adjustment or a check that the hydraulic lifters are correctly compensating for clearances, which directly protects the valve seats.
A well-maintained LPG car can cover hundreds of thousands of kilometres with no valve trouble. The key is treating the gas system as something that raises the servicing requirements, not something that exempts you from them. Regular, informed servicing is cheaper here than a cylinder-head repair.
Don’t forget the filters of the gas system itself — the vapour-phase and liquid-phase filters — which are replaced periodically, usually every dozen or so thousand kilometres. A clogged gas filter worsens engine running, raises fuel consumption and indirectly loads the unit. It’s separate from the classic oil service, but in an LPG car just as important for the engine’s longevity.
Frequently asked questions about oil on LPG
Does an LPG car need a special oil?
An oil labelled “LPG” isn’t strictly required, but the oil must meet the factory approval and cope well with high temperatures. Dedicated LPG/CNG variants can be a good choice, provided they also carry the engine’s required specification. In other words: the approval is mandatory, and the “for LPG” label is a nice but insufficient bonus.
By how much should I shorten the change interval on gas?
The practical rule is shortening the interval by roughly a third compared with the petrol recommendation. If you drive little but in town, it’s also worth keeping to a change once a year. Ultimately the interval depends on driving style and conditions, which is why with LPG cars we like to set it individually, after a chat about how and where the car covers most of its kilometres.
Does LPG really destroy the valves?
LPG itself doesn’t “destroy” valves automatically. The risk of burnt valves rises in older designs, with a poorly adjusted system or neglected servicing. The right oil, good spark plugs and valve-clearance checks effectively limit that risk. Many engines are even factory-adapted for gas and, given proper servicing, have no problem with LPG at all.
Do I need to change the oil filter more often on LPG?
Yes — the oil filter is replaced at every oil change, so a shortened interval automatically means changing the filter more often too. That’s good, because the filter traps contaminants from the hotter-running engine. There’s no need, though, to change it separately, between oil changes.
Can I run on gas right after a cold start?
No. LPG systems deliberately start the engine on petrol and switch to gas only once the right temperature is reached. Running on gas with a cold engine loads it further and worsens lubrication, so it’s best to let the car switch fuel on its own rather than forcing gas. It’s one of the simpler habits that genuinely extends the life of a gas-fuelled engine.
Can I use a long-life oil with LPG?
Long-life oils were designed for extended intervals under typical petrol or diesel use. With intensive gas driving it’s worth shortening the real interval anyway, so the “long life” label alone isn’t an argument for changing less often here. What counts is the approval and the actual working conditions of the engine, not the slogan on the pack.
Is running on gas worth it despite more frequent changes
This is drivers’ most common doubt when considering LPG. Yes, we change the oil a little more often, but the cost of a few extra changes a year is incomparably lower than the savings from cheaper fuel. For high-mileage cars a gas system usually pays for itself within a year or so, and more frequent oil changes are only a small item in that calculation.
It’s worth looking at the whole running cost, though, not just the price per litre of fuel. Add periodic system inspections, replacement of the vapour- and liquid-phase filters, and slightly more frequent ignition-system servicing. Taken together they still come out favourably, but only when the car is serviced regularly — a neglected LPG setup can quickly eat those savings with a costly repair.
