10W40 oil is a genuine classic among engine oils — for years it has sat on the shelf as a proven, affordable choice for older cars with higher mileage. In most cases it is a semi-synthetic, a product on the border between mineral and synthetic oil that combines a reasonable price with decent protection. It has clear advantages, but it does not suit every engine, and pouring it into a modern power unit can do more harm than good. In this article we explain exactly what the 10W40 symbol means, which designs it was created for, when it is just right and when it simply turns out to be too thick, and how it compares with the popular 5W30 and 5W40 classes.

What does the 10W40 symbol actually mean?

The 10W40 marking is a viscosity class according to the SAE standard, not a trade name or a statement about oil quality. It consists of two parts separated by the letter W, which comes from the English word Winter. The first part, „10W”, describes how the oil behaves in the cold, during a low-temperature start, while the second number, „40”, tells you about the viscosity of the oil once it has warmed up, at an operating temperature of around one hundred degrees Celsius. This whole system works exactly the same way as in other, widely seen multigrade markings.

The number „10” before the letter W means that the oil stays fluid down to moderately low temperatures, but not as low as with 5W or 0W classes. In most European climates 10W is usually enough, though in a truly bitter frost the engine cranks a little harder and the oil reaches the top of the unit more slowly. The number „40”, in turn, says that when hot the oil remains relatively thick and maintains a heavy lubricating film, which is beneficial in engines with larger clearances that have opened up over the years.

All of this makes it a natural candidate for high-mileage power units.

The most direct, noticeable effect is usually a smaller loss of oil between changes. Older engines often begin to consume oil through worn seals and valve guides, and a thicker 10W40 can curb this problem and extend calm running. It is of course not a miracle repair, but a sensible way to make an older unit run quieter, more smoothly and with a smaller appetite for top-ups. Usually a semi-synthetic — what does that mean in practice?

10W40 oils are in the vast majority semi-synthetics, that is blends of a mineral and a synthetic base. This construction is a deliberate compromise: a semi-synthetic is cheaper than a full synthetic, and at the same time offers noticeably better protection and stability than a pure mineral oil. For an older car whose manufacturer does not demand advanced, fully synthetic oils, this solution is usually entirely sufficient and the most cost-effective. It is worth knowing, however, how a semi-synthetic differs from a full synthetic before you make the decision.

At the same time, you have to remember that the viscosity class alone says nothing about the quality of the base or the additive package. Two 10W40 oils can differ from each other in durability, resistance to oxidation and the cleanliness they keep inside the engine. That is why, besides viscosity itself, it is always worth paying attention to the standard and any approval required by the manufacturer. The viscosity class is only the first filter of choice, not the final criterion of quality that guarantees the oil is right for your car.

10W40 is neither a „worse” nor a „better” oil — it is simply a viscosity class created for engines other than modern, fuel-efficient units. For the right car it fits perfectly; for the wrong one it does not suit at all.

When is 10W40 right, and when is it too thick?

10W40 is the right choice when the manufacturer of your car allows this class and the engine already has some years and mileage behind it. It works well in simpler, older petrol and diesel designs without a particulate filter, engineered back when thicker oils were the standard. In such an engine 10W40 provides a solid, heavy lubricating film and calm, economical running. The trouble only starts when we try to use it in a unit that was designed for a much thinner oil, where a heavy film is not an advantage but an obstacle.

In a modern engine 10W40 is often simply too thick. Contemporary units have tight clearances, precise oil pumps and narrow oil channels through which a thick oil flows too slowly.
