The effect is insidious: the battery looks healthy for years and yet, one frosty morning, it suddenly refuses to work. We explain why this happens and what you can do so it doesn’t catch you out.
This problem affects a huge group of drivers: the school run, the commute, popping to the shops — these are most often short, few-minute stretches with frequent stops. The car seems to be driven daily, yet the battery gets weaker week by week. That is why many owners are genuinely surprised when the battery dies despite regular driving — the problem is not a lack of use, but the way the car is used. Worse still, the symptoms stay hidden for a long time, because in warmer months the weakened battery still manages to start the engine and nothing seems wrong.
The good news is that this scenario can be controlled effectively. You don’t have to give up the car or change your lifestyle — it is enough to understand the mechanism and adopt a few simple habits that keep the battery in good shape despite daily short-distance driving.
Why short driving doesn’t recharge
A start is the biggest single current draw. On a short stretch, with the lights, heating and blower on, the alternator doesn’t manage to give the battery back as much as the start took. With each further start the deficit deepens, until the battery is only charged to part of its capacity and has no reserve left for a harder day.
It is worth understanding the mechanics of this. Starting the engine consumes a sizeable charge, which the alternator then has to return to the battery. The catch is that a battery charges most intensively only after a dozen or several dozen minutes of driving, once it is warm and the charging voltage has stabilised. On a three- or five-minute stretch the alternator barely covers the current consumption of the loads, and there simply isn’t time to replace what the start drew. Every such drive therefore ends slightly in the red.
That small deficit is not dangerous in itself — the problem is that it accumulates. After weeks and months of hundreds of short trips the battery operates in a state of chronic undercharge. This in turn leads to sulphation of the plates, a permanent process that gradually and irreversibly lowers the battery’s real capacity. In other words, the battery wears out faster even though the car is driven regularly and never sits idle.
Winter makes it worse
On cold days there are numerous loads and a harder start, and frost lowers the battery’s capacity. That’s why an undercharged battery most often dies in winter, when all the unfavourable factors pile up at the worst possible moment.
In winter, starting a cold engine needs far more current, because thicker oil offers more resistance and the chemical reactions in a chilled battery run slower. At the same time, from the first second you switch on the lights, the heated windscreen, the blower, the seat and mirror heating — and all of that loads the alternator, which has no time to recharge the battery anyway. On top of that, frost alone can cut the battery’s available capacity by tens of percent. As a result, a battery that somehow coped in summer suddenly has no strength to turn the starter in winter.
How much charge one start really takes
To grasp the scale of the problem, it helps to realise how much energy just starting the engine consumes. For a fraction of a second up to a few seconds, the starter draws a current of several hundred amps — a violent, powerful surge that no other load in the car produces. That charge then has to be calmly returned, and the alternator does it gradually, with a much smaller current spread over time.
In practice this means that after one start the battery needs several to a dozen minutes of steady driving to get back to where it was before. If in that time you stall and restart the car several times at lights, in a car park or in traffic, the deficit grows with each cycle. On short trips with frequent stops it can turn out that the battery is parked up in a worse state than it started the day.
How to recognise an undercharged battery
An undercharged battery usually sends signals before it gives up entirely. It is worth watching for a few typical symptoms that are easy to dismiss while the car still starts.
- The starter cranks noticeably slower, especially in the morning and cold
- Lights dim at idle and brighten when you add revs
- The car starts with difficulty after a weekend or a few days parked
- The trip computer reports voltage drops or electronics errors
- Start-stop stops working, because the system protects a weak battery
If you notice even some of these symptoms, the battery is probably working in a state of constant shortfall. This is not yet a death sentence, but a clear signal that it is worth reacting — recharge the battery and check its condition before, one morning, the car simply won’t start.
How to counter it

The simplest habit is, every now and then — say once a week or two — to cover a longer, half-hour route, ideally an out-of-town road at a steady speed. Such a drive gives the alternator time to genuinely recharge the battery, not just cover the current consumption. It is the cheapest and most effective way to reverse the effects of daily short-distance driving.
Periodic charging with a charger can significantly extend the battery’s life with this driving style. A modern charger with a maintenance function can be hooked up overnight once every few weeks — it will bring the battery to full on its own and keep it in good shape, slowing down sulphation. It is the ideal solution for drivers who only drive in town and have no way to head out on a longer route regularly.

Choosing a battery for city driving
If your driving style is mainly short trips, that matters when choosing a new battery too. It is worth going for a good-quality battery with parameters matching the maker’s recommendations, and in start-stop cars strictly the right AGM or EFB type. These designs cope far better with running in a partial state of charge and with the many cycles that are everyday life in city traffic.
Cutting corners on the battery with this usage profile usually doesn’t pay. The cheapest flooded battery in a car driven only in town will wear out faster, because it lands in the toughest conditions for it. It is better to choose a battery with a margin of quality and support it with good habits than to replace the cheapest model every two years because it can’t take the city rhythm.
When changing habits isn’t enough
If the battery is already heavily sulphated and has lost a large part of its capacity, no charger or longer route will reverse that. In that case charging will only bring a brief improvement, and the battery will keep going flat anyway. That is the natural moment for a replacement — especially if the battery is already a few years old and the symptoms intensify month by month.
It is also worth ruling out other causes of fast discharge, such as excessive drain — the so-called quiescent current drawn by the electronics after the car is switched off — or a failing alternator that doesn’t charge the battery as it should. If, despite good habits, the battery keeps dying, diagnostics will establish whether the battery itself is to blame or rather the electrical system.
Do city trips always destroy the battery?
Not always, but they are very unkind to it. What matters is the length of individual journeys and the number of starts, not the city itself. If you cover only a few minutes daily with numerous stops, the risk of undercharge is high. If, on the other hand, you drive one longer, flowing stretch once a day, the battery has time to recharge and will serve normally. What counts is the real driving profile, not the sheer number of kilometres covered in a month.
How often should I charge the battery?
With driving purely on short trips, a good rhythm is charging once every three to four weeks, and a little more often in winter. A modern automatic charger will recognise the battery’s state on its own and stop charging once full, so it is hard to go wrong. Regular, gentle top-ups are far healthier for a battery than letting it reach a deep discharge each time, after which the battery never fully returns to its former condition.
Do short trips harm hybrids too?
Yes, though in a slightly different way. In a hybrid and an EV the ordinary 12 V battery also powers the electronics and can likewise go flat with this usage style. True, it isn’t loaded by a classic start, but the frequent, short cycles of waking and putting the systems to sleep, along with numerous loads, can gradually drain it. That is why it is worth watching the small battery’s condition in these cars too.
Is parking worse than short trips?
These are two different, though related, problems. Long parking drains the battery through the electronics’ quiescent current, while short trips don’t let it recharge despite regular driving. In both cases the battery works in a state of undercharge and accelerated wear. The worst is the combination of both: a car used rarely and only on short stretches ages the battery exceptionally fast, because it combines chronic undercharge with slow self-discharge during successive stops.
